You could wait for Apple to release a new build, but reading around it seems that if you have your iPhone connected and unlocked and reinstall iTunes 12.8 then your Mac may offer to install an additional update to work with the iOS 12 device.

I've tried that and re booting the ipad

Tried the apple online help but they were useless when the conversation got tricky I was disconnected.

One suggestion was re install Itunes 12.8 When I told him I had that before and it wouldn't work, he suggested reinstalling OS 10.14. When I replied that the problem started when I upgraded to iPad to IOS 12 not when I upgraded to OS11, I was disconnected

Trying to reconnect with the same case ref was bounced to asking to call 'with the foot note that I may have to pay for the service.

Thank you for the help. Should have checked here before calling Apple Support. Your fix worked just fine. I am using High Sierra OS.

Spent hours with Apple support on phone. Suggestion was to take the phone to an Apple Store and see if it worked on their computer. I told the support person that it was strange that two phones and two computers had the same problem. Phones connected to the USB port. This was confirmed in "system report".

After hanging up I tired hooking up my ipad which was not updated to IOS 12.0, and it connected. Also connected an iPod and old iphone 4 I use for storing and playing music. This confirmed to me that it was a compatibility problem with itunes and OS 12.0 software. I googled the problem and found your post.

This is the first time some one at Apple support did not have a clue about this software problem and did not know how to fix it. I only found out about this because I wanted to back up my iphone to my Macbook before trading it in for a new XS model. Not so sure I want to rush out and spend $1,000 after this experience.

I wish I had found this thread with your solution 6 hours ago. Thank you so much it has worked a treat on an old MacBook Pro running Sierra with a supposedly up to date iTunes 12.8.0150 that failed to recognise my wife iPad Air following an up date to to IOS 12. For others out there with the same problem, I had to restart the MacBook before it offered the extra download.
