We're told this ISN'T an Apple site. We're told Apple DOESN'T monitor or assist on this site. We're told this is an ALL-VOLUNTEER site over which Apple exercises no control.

Now we're told "Apple hosts remove posts".

It appears our travels have taken us to "Credibility Gap".

Is Apple watching or is Apple not watching? If they are watching, why aren't they getting a handle on many of the snarky responses the volunteers offer? (I almost said "the snarky responses the volunteers profer", but I didn't want to get another snarky response about having a plate full of thesaurus.)

I truly meant no offence and I’m sorry if I offended you in anyway.

As for Apple I own loads of Apple devices going back years so I’m not anti Apple and I have android phones too.

As for a solution I don’t know what’s going to happen as everyone keeps saying it can’t happen and Apple don’t seem to be able to fix it.

so I guess I’m just frustrated at having spent thousands of pounds on devices that don’t work properly and the backup support has been well let’s just say unhelpful.

Nobody has said any of these things. Facts matter. Manufacturing facts to make a point is weak.

This is not a source of Apple provided support. That was disclosed to you when you signed up. But I digress.

Reality is snark in your mind. Ok.

Apple hosts monitor every post for adherence to the terms and conditions, including mine. If a post gets no response, an Apple community specialist will typically attempt to assist.

Here's an option. Become helpful, earn points and report me.

s everyone keeps saying it can’t happen and Apple don’t seem to be able to fix it.

Again... loose with the facts.

Nobody has denied *you* are having an issue. Many of us have acknowledged you have an issue. It is however, atypical and it is indeed unfortunate Apple has no solution.

I offered one and you dismissed it.

Jesus, I got it. They can’t or won’t answer my question. Problem is solved. Switch to an LG or a Microsoft product, gotcha. Now stop bickering already. Don’t you have anything better to complain about? If not, join the Democratic Party and you can whine with the rest of them.

now all I need to know is how to stop all the emails I’m getting of you two and your banter. Please help with that if you can.

Why are we still sending sensitive codes over open air?

I guess I am not really following this as a point of contention. Anytime you’re using a cellular data internet connection (or WiFi for that matter) your sending sensitive data “over the air”. It’s all just radio after all. So any online site you visit with a password, any bank app you use, anytime you check your financials, shop online, use Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, pay with PayPal, or whatever your sending your login and/or payment data “over the air”.

What matters is it sent in open human readable form? Or is it secured - e.g. https connections to web sites, end to end encrypted App sessions (why people should use their banks app over their web site - the apps are more secure), or, Apple’s end to end encrypted iCloud notification system. There is no way to use cellular or WiFi devices, and the internet, and NOT send sensitive personal data “over the air”. As long as those transmissions are made over secure mechanisms, I have no issue with that.

That’s one of the very reasons for 2 factor logins - someone would have to intercept and decrypt thae necessary information to access your account. (with your AppleID, two intercepts and two decrypts - the password and the 2FA code, and they have to decrypt the 2FA code within 10 minutes to use it).

Its either that or we all have to carry a bag of USB security dongles around for every web site or online service we use, and even then, those dongle codes will have to be authenticated with a web site “over the air” (again though using a secured connection) too. Even voice or other biometric authentication will still involve data sent “over the air”. Not openly over the air, but encrypted and secured over the air transmission of authentication data. There is no way to use the internet from mobile devices without those secured over the air exchanges of sensitive and personal data.

I use find my phone when I can't find my phone. If I'm looking for the phone, I can't get the authentification code that is sent to the phone. Please help. Can the authentification be sent to my email? Please help. Find my phone is useless if I can't get the authentificaion. One post said that 2 factor authentification can't be turned off.

In a browser, go to http://icloud.com/find and use your Apple ID to use Find My Phone without a code.

Yes I do agree with most of this, 2FA is quite a secure method but you say a bag full of dongles and Thot wouldn’t be required as all could be on one rolling code device like NFC card or wearable ring.

this just makes it safer and less intrusive I think. And why would they need to authenticate over air any further that the original application. As with rolling code the device and dongle will need to match the current code and header code in order to authenticate.

Well perhaps things may have change I say quietly as it only been 48hours,

I tried an experiment and reset my password again on my ID then switched off all devices and after re signing in on each device once I have had no further intrusion yet. So maybe this may continue to work ok at this point I don’t know. But maybe this will help someone else

Sep 7, 2020 11:09 AM in response to hAltonJones

I already had so many problems with 2FA and found no solutions, however I recently reset my user password and reset the devices and at present 2FA is on but working as it should.

not sure how long this will last but a little over 48 hours with no sign in requests.

i totally agree 2FA when it’s not working is a pain but it seems to be ok at least for now

I do wish Apple would stop bombarding people to sign up for it and allow users to decide what works best for them.

Who said that this isn't an Apple site? Second, there are moderators that protect volunteers from potential graphic images or inappropriate content. As if who's moderating it? I don't know. ToU is available at the bottom of the page if you are willing to go over it.

Those snarky responses? Please point some out and potentially read the questions they are really potentially trying to answer.

I don’t think it’s going to be possible to avoid 2FA from Apple as they are extremely aggressive in their approach to this.

I had to turn it on to make use of the device and for months had nothing but trouble constantly asking me to sign in even if not connected.

I had in the past reset my password and this had no effect on the problem. However since I recently reset the password and reset the devices, it seems to be fixed, not going to about too loud as I’m sure the next update from Apple will find.a way to screw it up again.

But until then peace prevails.

Sep 10, 2020 8:17 AM in response to GoldMonkey

No. Your remaining trusted devices will work with 2FA just fine.

The SMS telephone number IS FOR BACKUP ONLY. The DEFAULT method to get codes is via encrypted iCloud notifications which works with ANY and EVERY Apple trusted device you own (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, Mac) that is connected to the internet (be that connection an ethernet connection, a WiFi connection, a MiFi connection, a cellular data connection, a satellite internet connection).

You don’t even need to own an iPhone to use 2FA with your AppleID.
