in order to use any Apple device to its advertised specifications 2FA must be on.

Utter nonsense. And incorrect.

We have an iMac, MBP. MBA, 2 iPhones, and 3 iPads. Only one of them has 2FA turned on (his iPhone because he wants to use Apple Pay).

Granted, I am not able to use the features/services that require 2 FA such as ApplePay, AppleCard, etc. And, I get nags every time I log in here to enable it for better protection. For now, I have decided that I do not want it - so I do not have it. 2FA was never automatically enabled on any of the devices in this household. And, if it had been, I do have 2 weeks to turn it off. I also carefully check when I set up a new device so nothing is automatically enabled.

So, you need to pay attention when you are setting up and using your device.

And, as for this:

Dare I post a comment on this without being attacked again by the volunteers?

Actually, this entire thread (except for the first two pages) violates the ToU: we are not allowed to speculate or complain. We volunteer to help solve problems here; having people do nothing but complain and piling on without any reasonable logic, but an attitude does not work here too well. For one thing, it violates the ToU and, for another, this thread has long ago outlived its usefulness.

And this:

In one breath it’s not Apple moderated next it is so instead of putting people down Escalate the issues so the problems get fixed.

I tried to explain this once before:

Moderating = running the forum software; removing anything that violates the ToU. It has nothing at all to do with technical support. The moderators do not provide tech support. And Apple tech support does not participate here.

We cannot escalate any issue. We can try to help or send you to Apple support. This issue cannot be fixed here. It can only be addressed by Apple. So, instead of complaining here, contact Apple.

That is it for my contribution here; I did feel I needed to correct your false statement that one must have 2FA in order to use any device. Specifications have nothing to do with features. Specs cannot be changed; features can usually be enabled or disabled.

Sorry but once again the point is missed,

If you want to use the device with the features advertised you must enable 2FA or many will simply not work.

Despite all the issues I experienced at first with 2FA, now it works it’s fine.

This has dragged on and on because people are still having problems, many of which there seems to be no help with.

Since most whom are having these issues have already contacted support and feedback,

pages like this are most people’s last bastion of hope.

regardless of weather or not this is an Apple support page or not, It bears the Apple logo and escalating a problem that is present should be more powerful than a feedback message that doesn’t appear to get the message home.

The fact that there’s simply no official way for the man in the street to complain about any Apple issue just further validates this.

So whilst I agree this is way off the subject, it’s still important as absolutely no other way of solving problems.

I use 2FA and now it’s working for me I have recommended it to others here.

But with the months of problems I experienced I’m saying I understand others frustration and if that’s wrong then there’s really something wrong with the whole idea of a help forum.

with the features advertised

Now you are correct .

I decided that I will not give up my privacy and have a phone number stored online. Neither will I ever violate someone else's privacy by giving up their phone number only to have them inconvenienced having to call me to give me a code. That will never happen. so, in essence I am unable to get 2FA. I could get a number from Skype or other services; but I am not willing to pay a monthly fee for such a number just because Apple demands a number. So, I am doing without the features requiring 2FA.

I think the point overall is the way in which this system was and is imposed upon people,
2FA when working properly is an extra layer of security for Apple.
However the point that keeps being ignored here is the fact that this system is not mentioned as compulsory in any sales or marketing. Your statement of don’t use Apple online completely destroys the point of buying it in the first place. An Apple device with no account is a car with no keys.
in order to use any Apple device to its advertised specifications 2FA must be on.
So your argument doesn’t hold water.
I own and use many Apple devices and have done so for many years so I’m not against Apple or 2FA but I am like most on here unhappy with its implementation and lack of any pre sales warnings.
2FA when it works is fine, however when it’s not it ruins the Apple experience altogether.
There is absolutely no help for this online or via support and some volunteers on here just add to the problems.
In one breath it’s not Apple moderated next it is so instead of putting people down Escalate the issues so the problems get fixed.
im sorry to all the good volunteers who do actually help here, but a few are losing this forum it’s good reputation and credibility.

Well I never attacked anyone? So no idea what that comment is about?

As with every online service in existence, now or ever, companies always have terms that state requirements for use may change at any time. Again, it’s a companies additional online services that are relevant here - and those are not fixed nor static. As Apple has added services, they’ve apparently decided that their universal login ID system, the AppleID, needs changes as well. You agreed to those very terms when you first ever created an AppleID. Again, not only perfectly legal, but also a standard in the industry, from ALL online service account providers. Terms of use are never static, and never have been.

And you can indeed use an Apple device as advertised without using any Apple online services that require 2FA with your AppleID (as mentioned already by other users).

An Apple device without 2FA is nothing at all like a “a car with no keys”. It is more akin to a car with keys, but no built in nav system, or a car with keys and no OnStar connectivity. The car still works perfectly as a car, just not with all the goodies you could use with it with if you accepted the additional terms of use.

Dare I post a comment on this without being attacked again by the volunteers?

How is it an attack to ask you to respect the terms and conditions you agreed to?

is imposed upon people,

This comment is about Apple Policy.

mentioned as compulsory in any sales or marketing.

This comment is about Apple Policy.

It is not compulsory to use an iPhone. It is required/compulsory if you choose to use certain Apple features. Not the same thing.

I am like most on here unhappy with its implementation and lack of any pre sales warnings.

This comment is about Apple Policy.

Do you see the pattern? You demand we respect you when you do not respect the terms and conditions YOU agreed to.

I respect your right to be unhappy. Go ahead. Be unhappy.

Please take your arguments elsewhere.

I absolutely hate Apple now! Y’all have made what use to be user friendly horrible! Have to log in 100 different times and can’t turn off the 2 factor verification which is a total pain and I don’t need it. Instead of trying to be so fancy listen to your customers!!! If I like androids I would never purchase an Apple product again! Y’all must make products for your developers and not your customers. Just weird and stupid.

Yep, spot on....absolute paternalism... 'We at Apple know what is good for even if you don't....'

To respond to this message on a previously trusted computer, 2FA required me to get a verification code from a second device...

2FA is an ABSOLUTELY HOPELESS design feature.

Just wait, though, there will be a barrage from the Apple groupies jumping on your comments.....

Sep 16, 2020 9:31 AM in response to Spacious

from the Apple groupies jumping on your comments.....

So looking past the unwarranted name calling...

What the volunteers will call out is that discussing Apple Policy, which both comments do, is not permitted here.

You are all entitled to be unhappy. To not like 2FA or how it was implemented. That is not the debate.

This community will not get you an answer or even a response from Apple.

Apple is not allowing 2FA to be disabled at this point. Nobody here can change that or explain that.

Telling us repeatedly that this is what you what is beyond futile.

Finally, telling you the accurate truth is not jumping on your comments.

Apple sucks. This is the last iPhone for me. I don't want this "feature" it is a pain in the neck. Please let me opt out. I was trying to set the phone to ignore the nagging to start the "feature" and Apple lured me down the path of implementation. Now I have to waste my time every time I want to do something with my phone. Does Apple even care? No, they obviously do not.
