can't edit bookmarks in Safari

I can't edit bookmarks in Safari. I'm using High Sierra 10.13.6. This is an administrator account, so no parental blocks. When I go to Bookmarks:Edit Bookmarks, nothing happens. Any ideas?

Have you tried disabling your Safari extensions?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hello kjfilp12,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are having an issue with editing bookmarks in Safari. You don't mention which version of the macOS you are using on your MacBook Pro, but we have the following information on bookmarks, to include editing. This information is on macOS High Sierra, but is similar for most other versions.

Safari Help - Bookmark pages

This section addresses the editing of bookmarks:

Manage bookmarks

  1. Click the Sidebar button User uploaded file in the toolbar, then click the Bookmarks button User uploaded file.

  2. Control-click a bookmark or folder.

  3. Choose from the shortcut menu to do any of the following:

    • Rename or edit a bookmark or folder.

You can also force click the name, or click and hold the name until it’s highlighted and then enter a new one.

    • Edit a bookmark’s description.

    • Copy or delete a bookmark or folder.

    • Create a bookmark folder.

    • See detailed folder contents.

To edit a bookmark’s description, double-click a folder in the sidebar, then Control-click the item and choose Edit Description.

You can also manage bookmarks by choosing Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks.

Best regards.
