finder crash when clicking on any web link located inside the folder

strangely finder crash when i open any link located in any folder - when i double click on whatever web link, instead of chrome (or safari ) opening that link, the source folder restart - seems like finder crash and restart that folder but without open the web page.

is very weird cos if try with right click and then "open with" chrome ( or safari ), it works.. it works even if i copy to desktop and clicking on that link

if i try changing to "always open with" safari, instead of chrome - it crash again but it came with the error attached bellow.

it happens only with web links inside any folder - but as well it work fine w any kind of files like png, jpeg, psd or whatever others

i use an mac pro and worked just fine without any glitch with os sierra till today. i didn't installed or make any kind of major changes lately.. only yesterday itunes didn't saw my iphone ( after i upgraded to ios 12 ) and asked to instal some kind of software first when i plugged my phone to itunes. ( i really didn't pay much attention - it was an pop up window with " installing software") but after itunes restarted, my iphone was there.

i reinstalled chrome, repair disk permissions .. but without any luck

any suggestion pls? Thanks

I'm having the same problem. Mine started within a day of installing Safari 12, Software update 10.12.6, and Remote Client Update 3.9.3 on two different iMacs running Sierra 10.12.6. The only solution that I have been able to find is to reinstall the operating system, and that only works for a day or two at most before I have the same problem. I would have thought that Safari 12 was the problem, but I have been running Firefox for the last couple days, and I just noticed that the problem just recurred. I spoke to an Apple senior level advisor, and after examining various files from one of my computers, he said that Safari appeared to be "messing with Finder," and that Apple would need to come up with a patch to prevent the problem. In my case the problem doesn't occur in icon or list view - only column or cover flow view. Also, as corruptdream mentioned, I can open .webloc files in folders by using a right-click (or by copying the .webloc files to the desktop). But there are other problems; for example, once the problem recurs I can't do a command-I on any .webloc files, even by copying to the desktop or by using a right-click.

I am used to having my computers work without a hitch, and I am not looking forward to having to reinstall the OS for the fourth time in a week. 😟

i just upgraded to high sierra and the issue is gone. but i upgraded from the version of sierra right away after it was restored from time machine back up and without doing those updates from app store. after going to 10.13.6, via app store, it seems that itunes it was upgraded as well and no more other things around there. so in high sierra the issue was resolved.

I can confirm that I am having the same issues after updating to Safari 12 on macOS 10.12.6. On a webloc file, doing a Get Info or attempting a Quick Look causes the Finder to crash. As others have reported, this is system-wide, not user account specific. For now I will just live with the issue. Double clicking a webloc file still works and successfully opens the link in Safari. For now, I'll just save web pages as Webarchive files and paste URL's into the Comments field using Get Info. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix or Apple releases an update.

I have an identical problem, with the addition that "info" fails when going through the process of changing webloc icon pictures.

I've attempted to both pick up "info" from a webloc and also open a web site from a webloc item on the desktop from within finder......all at an Apple store using a mac sierra os machine.

Same results...."fail".

So, I would say the problems are related to Sierra software, maybe update bug(s).

No amount of fiddling is going to fix this issue, more likely a clever programmer can sort it out.

Have just realised this problem maybe related to a recent (Sept 2018) safari update, with Safari apparently having tight integration into Sierra os.

There's no way that I know of to rollback the Safari version to test this, so as I've previously mentioned we're all stuck with the problem until such time as the gurus at Apple discover and fix it.

Also just to clarify my previous post, when I checked at an Apple store I used one of the store machines, not mine. So as you can imagine the Apple techie was a bit shocked to see the finder crash, info not work etc.

I do wonder what the Apple testing team is doing with such an obvious bug lurking in an update release.

Hope I can be proved wrong on all this and it's really simpler to fix, but have to wait and see I suppose.

I can confirm that it's definitely Safari 12.0 update that is causing this problem. I informed Apple on the day the update was released.

Unbelievable! How does such a major bug get through any half-competent testing regime before being released to the world. Further evidence of Apple's appalling collapse in QA. Federighi is incompetent and should be fired.

I tend to agree that the software "Boss" should have been much more careful with QA, mind you I'll always remember the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster...with the philosophy of 'everything is fine, let's just go'. History always repeats itself.

Given the multitude of MS Windows failures over the years and switching to Mac, I'm disturbed to encounter this standard of performance particularly after three or four years of A1 quality assistance etc. If this continues, then my trusty Linux is without doubt the best alternative, perhaps dual boot with my Mac Mini.

Having said that, there are also many LInux experts eager to help in the event of problems.

We'll see how quickly the Apple behemoth fixes this issue !

"you can upgrade to high sierra"

well ... that's exactly NOT the point ... the idea is to be able to keep using i.e. Sierra

Why does one have to change OS, just to have the most normal thing (highlight a webloc in split or list view - without the finder crashing) work again? That used to work perfectly fine before. For me, High Sierra always felt buggy and never right & Mojave is too fresh to change to (and does not work on Mac Minis < 2012). Sierra worked just fine.

Feels like Apple is trying to force users to play guinea-pig for their new OS', by dismembering their own older OS' with bad updates.

Oct 6, 2018 5:17 PM in response to newuseraccountbilly

Unfortunately, no can do, newuseraccountbilly; well - not easily anyway. Safari is considered part of the OS and is protected under Apple's SIP (System Integrity Protection). You'll see if you Google "delete Safari from my Mac" that it's possible but quite tricky.

Yet again, we're at the mercy of a slow-to-respond, non-communicative, ever-more-arrogant Apple.

Thank you GlenP.

Yes, I then tried to trash Safari, but was blocked by the system.

It seems like this is within the scope of the jurisprudence established when Microsoft tried to insist their browser was necessary to functioning of the Windows system. The courts told MS to fix it. But that wasn't with the Trump courts and justice department. And now the Supremes have an anti-consumer majority.

Well, Well, Well,

I have been nosing around for some way to fix things here ,having many of the same problems which this thread is discussing; ie; Finder crashing, also Spotlight quiting mid-stream, etc. etc.

I figured I would try a restore OS or the Combo Update but will hope & wait for a Safari Update to get it all fixed.

I can't believe they would (purposely) leave Sierra in such a state just to make us upgrade to HS or Mojoby. Hmph!

Oct 10, 2018 8:46 AM in response to corruptdream

I'm having the same issue, really annoying. The finder crash/refresh only happens while using column view in a finder window (doesn't do it in icon view or list view). I'm always working in column view mode, and constantly save weblog files in my workflow.

It definitely seems to be something to do with Safari 12 and the way webloc files are handled after upgrading to Sierra 10.12.6 on my Mac Pro.

I can't upgrade to Mojave because of some older apps I must use that are not compatible with Mohave. Hope apple fixes this soon; really irritating!
