finder crash when clicking on any web link located inside the folder

strangely finder crash when i open any link located in any folder - when i double click on whatever web link, instead of chrome (or safari ) opening that link, the source folder restart - seems like finder crash and restart that folder but without open the web page.

is very weird cos if try with right click and then "open with" chrome ( or safari ), it works.. it works even if i copy to desktop and clicking on that link

if i try changing to "always open with" safari, instead of chrome - it crash again but it came with the error attached bellow.

it happens only with web links inside any folder - but as well it work fine w any kind of files like png, jpeg, psd or whatever others

i use an mac pro and worked just fine without any glitch with os sierra till today. i didn't installed or make any kind of major changes lately.. only yesterday itunes didn't saw my iphone ( after i upgraded to ios 12 ) and asked to instal some kind of software first when i plugged my phone to itunes. ( i really didn't pay much attention - it was an pop up window with " installing software") but after itunes restarted, my iphone was there.

i reinstalled chrome, repair disk permissions .. but without any luck

any suggestion pls? Thanks

I'm having the same problem. Mine started within a day of installing Safari 12, Software update 10.12.6, and Remote Client Update 3.9.3 on two different iMacs running Sierra 10.12.6. The only solution that I have been able to find is to reinstall the operating system, and that only works for a day or two at most before I have the same problem. I would have thought that Safari 12 was the problem, but I have been running Firefox for the last couple days, and I just noticed that the problem just recurred. I spoke to an Apple senior level advisor, and after examining various files from one of my computers, he said that Safari appeared to be "messing with Finder," and that Apple would need to come up with a patch to prevent the problem. In my case the problem doesn't occur in icon or list view - only column or cover flow view. Also, as corruptdream mentioned, I can open .webloc files in folders by using a right-click (or by copying the .webloc files to the desktop). But there are other problems; for example, once the problem recurs I can't do a command-I on any .webloc files, even by copying to the desktop or by using a right-click.

I am used to having my computers work without a hitch, and I am not looking forward to having to reinstall the OS for the fourth time in a week. 😟

Hello Christoph.

How did you revert to safari 11.1.2 ?

Not sure if the current version of sierra, as downloaded from Apple (oct 2018), contained that version of safari. If so, then clearly reinstalling another copy of sierra 'over the top' should fix the problem....not bother with all the safari updates of course otherwise the problem would replecate.

When I used command-R on startup to reinstall the OS in an attempt to fix the problem, the version of Safari that was installed was 10.1.2, which works beautifully. I do, of course, have to live with daily reminders that there is an update available, but I am ignoring those for now. The only other solution that I know of is to upgrade to High Sierra, and I still have a software issue to work out before I can do that.

How can we even upgrade to High Sierra now on older devices that aren't compatible with Mojave? The only upgrade option shown is Mojave and High Sierra is gone.

Plus, I really resent the fact that Apple has left such a blaring, huge bug left festering in their OS this long for customers that can't upgrade to High Sierra because of compatibility issues made through new bugs in that OS. Do they want us to switch to Windows machines?

Thanks for sharing this info Christoph (and to original poster AsburyParkJoe). I've just reverted to Safari 11.1.2 on Sierra using this method and the Finder no longer crashes when using webloc files. One small point: booting into macOS Recovery mode in single-user mode using ⌘-R-S (instead of just ⌘-R) allows you to enable/disable SIP (csrutil enable/disable) slightly more quickly.

I'm literally having the exact same problem as you. Posted on similar threads!

I'm also having this problem with Finder too--and it started around the same time as you after upgrading some applications in late September. I've tried re-installing Sierra 10.12.6 and while it fixed the problem for a few days, just last night Finder began crashing again with basically any folder that had a URL file in it. Regardless of whether I was actually clicking on a URL file. And it doesn't seem switching/testing other users works either, it's only a temporary fix along with re-installing your OS.

It's happening to any URL file from any browser (I've tried all of them) too. It's refreshing to know it's not just a me problem, I was worried that I would need to get a new computer... I hope that Apple fixes this soon.

You certainly don't need to buy a new computer possibly_a_penguin. It sounds like you have encountered the dreaded Safari 12.0 update issue. Look at one of the previous posts by Christoph Landon which details how to revert to Safari 11.1.2. I did that and no more crashing finder when I look at webloc files. If you do that, just make sure you don't then upgrade Safari to v12.0 when prompted by the App Store.

Oh, I definitely wasn't seriously considering buying a new computer--I was more worried if it was personal or a program issue as a whole.

Yeah, the Safari 12.0 and additional security update have seemed to fry a lot of peoples' Finder whenever there is a .webloc file in a folder. I'll see what I can do, since I've basically tried everything up to this point and don't want to try to update anything too much because I'm currently in school and the set up I have is ideal.

Thanks for your advice!

DG, the finder crash issue can occur on all browser url links, chrome, safari, firefox. I am not a mac software expert, though have been using it for 30 years in the design applications world. I doubt Safari is the problem since i never used it until when i started testing what types of browser links within folders would cause the finder to crash...it was all of them.
