finder crash when clicking on any web link located inside the folder

I have not string: <string>com.apple.weblocation</string> in the info.plist

does not do it for me! still crashes.

It's not a solution – it's a workaround.

What specifically doesn't work for you ?

Can you at least use Spotlight more stable,

or use Column view without crashing Finder ?

No, if you tested in the Guest account, that's good enough. Yes, some video distortion is to be expected in Safe Mode.

Since the issue seems to be system-wide, as opposed to anything in your user account I'd try using the Combo Update. The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings but that said you should always have a backup.

I installed iTunes 12.8 in July and had no issues with it. My best guess is that the problem is Safari 12, though the security update could be involved.

These iMacs are older - 2013 and 2014. I haven’t tried upgrading to High Sierra, though I may do so within the next few days.

The only usable (not really a) workaround is:

- Disable Indexing of Bookmarks and History

... then at least Spotlight will not crash almost instantly when opening it.

Finder will still crash when you highlight any webloc though ... 😟

I really believe Apple is trying to force users into their new OS'.

by making older OS' unusable through bad updates ... reminds me of the iOS update, that suddenly made older phones lose their batterylife way quicker ...

Just did the Safari 12.0.2 update in my Sierra system (hoping this would FINALLY be fixed!!!!) - nada.

PLEASE Apple FIX THIS .webloc 'preview' bug that's been introduced since Safari 12 on macOS Sierra...??

Thought I phone AppleCare and use my support there, after all I paid for it.  In short no success.  The ‘Issue is under investigation” is the answer of level two agent.  After a lengthy back and forth I conclude this means; we know about it and will do nothing about it.  

He claimed several things that contradict what is being said in these forums, so an other disappointing moment in the life of Apple owner. 

For my information, anybody found a solution? 

SOLUTION

• Currently working for OS X 10.12.6
• Finder doesn't crash when .weblock is clicked.
• Safari is able to launch the url.
• However, Quicklook views .weblocs as plain text files, bypassing the web preview generation.

Overview

Step 1

File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist

Remove: <string>com.apple.weblocation</string>

Step 2

File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist

Add:

<string>com.apple.internet-location</string>

Location:

<string>QLGenerator</string>
<key>LSItemContentTypes</key>
<array>
	<string>public.data</string>
	<string>com.apple.internet-location</string> <!-- sierra-webloc-crashfix  -->
</array>

Step 3

Copy File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator

Move Copy:/Library/QuickLook/Text.qlgenerator

Step 4

Terminal Command:

qlmaange -r

Locate File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/

-Right Click and select “Show Package Contents”

Copy File to desktop: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist

…Enter PW to allow changes

Duplicate File on desktop & rename: original.Contents.info.plist

-Edit desktop/Contents.info.plist

Remove:

<string>com.apple.weblocation</string>

- Save, move both files to replace original File: /System/Library/QuickLook/Web.qlgenerator/Contents.info.plist

…Enter PW to allow changes

Here are the tricks I used to work around these problems, while waiting for Apple to do something about it:

• For spotlight: go to System Preferences > Spotlight and uncheck the box "Bookmarks & History"
• For .webloc files: go to the main disk, open the View menu > Show View Options and uncheck the box "Show preview column."

I'm sorry, but your words are too scarce ("it still crashes" - what is "it") to verify what you've done. Previewing a webloc file will indeed still crash. But does Spotlight still crash immediately when you have set your preference not to search your browser history and favourites and search for anything which might involve a webloc file ?
