Airpods Mic won't work while making a call

I am having trouble getting the mic to work on my airpods while making a call. I can hear the caller on my airpods, but they cannot hear anything I say. Not garbled sound, actually no sound at all. I have an iPhone X with iOS12 (was not working before update also). I can ask siri questions from the airpods when connected, and that works fine, so I think the physical mic is working. I have disconnected and reconnected the airpods, reset the airpods also. I really don't know what other options I can change to make these work.
