Yes, after hours of fails, doing the latest Mac system update and then updating iTunes as prompted allowed my iPhone XS Max to actually communicate with iTunes and it's currently reloading my iPhone 7 Plus backup and music. Thank you!

You will need to download the latest version of iTunes via browser (type in "download iTunes" in google and install it, and not updating it via App Store)

After restarting iTunes, it will automatically ask you to install an update for the phone on your mac. This has resolved the issue.

I had the same issues, first updated to iTunes 12, then told to upgrade the OS to 10.11.6 which I have done, then once completed, there is one software prompt that needs to be installed once your phone is connected to your MAC, then eventually you'll be able to restore to your new device from backup. Apple should really warn users about this! My restore is now running so phew......

why is it when i downloaded the new iTunes it won't let me open it because it says "you have to be running macOS 10 10.5 but I'm running 10.95?

thanks. i was getting the same error message, and thanks to your post upgraded my mac as well (just iTunes, did not have to upgrade my 2015 mbp to high sierra) and it seems to be working now.
