Looks like we are waiting for WatchOS 5.0.1... I spoke to a senior Apple technical support rep this weekend (22Sept2018) and he went off to speak to engineering and get back to me. He just got back to me by email and these are his exact words: "I did get a response back from the engineers, and they told me that they are aware of some of the built-in complications not working with the new faces. As such, a fix will come out as a software update."
I was just customizing my infograph and I did to stumble upon this upsetting situation. Really ***** how they don’t have all complications you can put on infograph face. But I’m sure Apple will get it right when 5.1 comes out.
One other addition to this thread... I upgraded from series 2 to 4 and used old infographic with phone and message complications. the new info graphic face not only didn’t have message and mail but it doesn’t have simple phone complication. Itsgot complications for all your favorites?!!! Like I’m going to call one favorite exclusively?!?? Not only do I want/need message complication but a generic phone too!!’ Hopefully this will be fixed. Meaanwhile I’ve got both old and new infographic faces active in the watch and swipe between them when I need old vs new features. Works for now. But hopefully this won’t be a permanent problem!!
Agreed, and hoping this is an unfortunate (and temporary!) oversight.
Messages/mail and other useful complications should be included in the next revision. Today 5.0.1 was released, and no updates to watch faces or complications. Boo.
I hadn't realised that the new Infographic Modular face is even further restricted (in terms of available complications to display) than the Infographic face. To me this seems to suggest that they simply haven't yet designed how these apps will work within these two different formats - which is good news, in that they presumably will become available in due course.
However it still seems unlike Apple (as said above) to launch Watch 4 with these faces as a key selling point before some of the more obvious complications are fully developed for them...
Branta - OK, I see what you mean. You would imagine that when they design a new face they would require that it accommodates a minimum number of the most used 'objects' or complications. Looking at the list of faces and available complications in the link above, it's striking how apparently random the range of availability is across the various faces, old and new.
Naively I just assumed that all faces would accommodate any of the apps that support complications (subject only to the number of complications available in any face). Judging by this thread I'm not alone....let's hope they sort soon, as everyone here seems to agree.

Can someone try explain the reason for not allowing all complications on all faces?
Only Apple can explain that and they have not done so. You can let them know how you feel here:
What iOS version are you running on your phone and what watch OS version are you running on your watch? Are you using beta software on either? Did you reboot BOTH devices when you updated to the latest OS on both devices?
I suggest you hit https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html and express your disappointment direct to Apple’s product team.
Apple still wants you to used the old face. That's all i can come up with. So that's what i did . Used one of the face for message , phone. OR just wait for the next update. still ***** !
Just confirming I also have no messages or mail complications under the new Infographic faces.
I also don't have any third party complication options for my apps (Omnifocus etc). That's very understandable that they would still just be being developed but it is weird that Apple did not get these obvious ones ready in time.
To be honest I feel a bit annoyed this has not been mentioned in a single review I have seen of the Series 4.
Likewise I will have just use an old watch face for now and try to be patient.
I had a Series 2 before upgrading to a Series 4. On the Series 2 I used the Modular watchface almost exclusively for the entire time I had the Series 2 simply because it was the watchface that had the most complications and was easy to read at a glance. I used the following complications on this watchface:
Time
Day/Date
Activity
Calendar
Battery
Weather Temp
So I never set any of the complications to mail or messages - these would come up through their own default app - I never felt the need to use up a complication for mail or messages so for me I'm not going to miss them. I know that's me and of course a lot of people DID use them as complications and are used to that and want to be able to use them on the Infographic watchfacess - all I can suggest is keep on voicing your opinions until Apple takes note and adds the ability to add mail and messages to the complications through an iOS update - then everyone is happy
Mr Luigi - that's an interesting point. So it's not just about the absence of some complications from these new faces, it's also the absence of usefully displayed data from some of those that are available. Which, again, points to Watch 4 having been launched before the complications for these faces were fully thought through...
In the case of third party apps, maybe the developers just weren't given a long enough lead time - but this surely can't have been the case for native apps such as Mail and Messages.
The new infograph complications was one of the main reason I upgraded from series 3 to 4.
Now I come to find that the complications that I use the most are not available. Those are very basic complications for productivity.
Mail - I need to quickly glance at my watch to see if I have mail messages
Messages - quickly access the message app and see if I have any unreplied messages
Find my friends - Find out where my wife and kids are at any time
I really hope that Apples fixes this because I'm forced to use the old modular face which doesn't hold as many complications.
