The new Infographic faces (new to Watch 4) do not offer either Mail or Messages as configurable complications. Which seems very odd. Unless anyone else has discovered otherwise. Hopefully they will update this shortly - so for now, reverting to old watch face set-up.

Same with mine. This by far my biggest (and really the only) complaint with the series 4. However it is a huge complaint. The first thing I did with it when unboxing was set up a new Infograph watch face. I was really upset to see I couldn’t add my most used complications: messages, email, phone. What was supposed to be an exciting experience quickly turned to one of confusion and disappointment. Come on Apple, make this right. Can’t be that hard.

Am sorry but those of you who say it’s not a big deal, speak for yourselves.... I know a certain CEO of Apple who would have not stood for this poor attention to detail.... nor would he have stood for delays in a major feature “not being ready”. Apple are saddly getting quite a habit for letting software go out that isn’t 100% finished

and before anyone says anything I am a massive Apple fan. One of my main reasons for getting a series 4 was for the infograph watch face and I ALWAYS use the messages complication so yes I was very disappointed to see it was not available.... Come on Apple get it sorted...

I still dont understand why they removed complications.

Its not that they need to develop or modify the complications, all that probably needs to be Done is to define that the already existing complications can be added to this ”Face”.

Can someone try explain the reason for not allowing all complications on all faces?

The new faces define a couple new types of complications, for example diagonal corner complications, and richer functionality for traditionally placed ones, so old complications (even first party ones made by Apple) need to be updated to work with WatchOS 5. It is not automatic. That updating has not been done yet. No one but Apple knows why. You are encouraged to give Apple your feedback about this issue - many of the posts in this thread include the link to the feedback form.

Kind of an odd oversight on the side of Apple here. I just upgraded my Watch Series 3 to Watch 4 and the Infograph face should include messages and mail at a minimum. I provided feedback appropriately. Otherwise, the watch is a major step up as far as I'm concerned!

That said, I did stumble upon this, which shows Apple is going to be updating the list of complications for Apple Watch 4 Infograph Face: More first-party complications coming to Apple Watch Series 4 Infograph watch face

Hope you're well!

As a premier and long standing member of your fan club, it would be an honor!!

Here's how I managed to get the latest and greatest:

Me: "But, how can I be on the Discussions forum and help people with their new devices, if I don't have a new device of my own to learn how to help them?"

Partner: "Just get it, you know you were going to buy it/them anyway!"

Only it's a win/win for us both, cuz I buy everything in pairs. We both get the latest and greatest!

Hallelujah! We're saved. I can confirm that 5.1.2, released today, brings the legacy complications like Messages, Mail, Phone, etc. to the new Apple Watch Series 4 faces ("Infographic" and "Infographic Modular"). Yay! Note: it took a while for me to get them to show up - you might need to reboot or create a new face from scratch to get them to show up. But they are there. So excellent!

4 months later but better late than never. It did not feel good to buy this watch when I did and I did not like having to swipe through faces to see messages/email etc. I had to move backwards. I will not buy early again. Lessons learned. Enthusiasm curbed.

For what it's worth, the macOS Mojave Dark Theme was overdue by a decade... I guess we are actually making progress with these things now.

I didn't have that much luck with re-boots. What fixed it for me was starting a new face from scratch. In other words, don't take your existing Infographic or Infographic Modular face and look for the legacy complications in the list, go to the face gallery and create another new Infographic face, and when you go to set it up the new legacy complications should appear on the list. You can then set up the new face the way you want it and delete your old copy of the Infographic face. Follow what I mean?

XtopherM - thanks for that. I tried that also....and don’t have those legacy complications there either. To be clear, I assume they should appear in the alphabetical list of available complications? I’m looking for Mail and Messages but under ‘M’ I have only Moon and Music in all face positions for the infographic face in the face gallery.
