New iPhone XS Max “Number changed to Primary” notification in iMessage

When I send text messages to a friend who does not have an iPhone, every time I send a new message or they send a new message the message “Number changed to Primary” appears in the chat display area. It is really annoying and I can’t figure out how to turn it off.

I just upgraded to the new iPhone XS Max. It was delivered to my door, so I set it up. This problem didn’t occur on my old phone. I have logged out of my Apple ID on my old phone as well. Any idea how to fix?User uploaded file

This is what worked for me.

Issue started after I changed my plan with ATT and rebooted a few times. Didn't want to lose the contacts or the years of SMS I've been collecting as an information hoarder. Spent two days on the interwebbernets looking for the definitive answer and trying different things. This worked - for me - and has stuck for a few hours:

1) Settings -> Messages

1) Send and Receive -

Turn off all addresses except phone number.

Turn off iMessage

2) Settings -> Phone

1) My Number

      • Delete the phone number that is in this field.

3) Reboot phone

1) I didn't do hard reset, hard powerdown, none of that. Just vol down and side button until "power off" option, then once it was off for about a minute turned it back on.

4) Settings -> Messages

1) Turn iMessage back on.

2) wait a few seconds. Can back out of menu and come back in. Want to make sure it's no longer "waiting for approval"

3) Adjust "Send and Receive" to what you want it to be

      • I receive at a few places, only send from phone number.
      • You will notice that there IS a phone number again.

5) Reboot iPhone - see step 3. Nothing funky here.

Viola - I tested with my droid buddies and no longer see the message.

This was all done on iOS 12.2 on a XS Max 512.

Hello, I bought my brand new iPhone XS in April 2019. I also don't have a dual sim. I called Apple and they said it is a bug and they are investigating it. I told them that they have been investigating since September 2018 (cause I read a lot of complaints of the web). She said that they didn't find a solution yet and to make sure I update always my IOS. My problem is that when I start a new message, I choose the contacts, then I use the effects (bubble, balloons, etc.) then I press the blue arrow to send it. It gives me a pop up at the bottom saying: Number not available. Which number would you like to send the message with? PRIMARY or CANCEL. I tried primary then the message is sent. I tried cancel, it didn't send. Then I went in my message and deleted the message. What works for me right now is this: When I want to send effects with Message I need first just to type a phrase like: Hello. Then once that contact is in message then I go in effects and choose bubbles or confetti then it sends it (it gives me the impression that Effects doesn't recognize Contacts). It does the same thing with the giphys. I don't have 2 telephones and I'm quite upset cause I have been saving money for this brand new iPhone XS and already there is a bug. I called also my carrier Telus, and she told me that in the iPhone there is a SIM card and an E-card implemented in the iPhone itself. She said that they are not offering yet this service but Rogers does. It doesn't make sense that Apple is sending this option and when I look under Cellular - Telus - there is no option available like Primary and Secondary telephone - only Telus. I'm getting tired trying to figure out what it is but all of us is doing the same thing cause it is not functioning like it supposed to function. Apple is taking long to resolve this problem and the girl told me they don't know when it will be resolved. I'm just sad cause this was a gift to myself for my birthday July 1st and I saved my money for one year and was so happy. But when using iMessage and effects, it's like I got hit on the head and I am disappointed. Hopefully Apple will do something soon. We just need to be patient and believe it will be resolved. Sorry about my writing - I am French and my second language is English. I did my very best to explain my problem - you are not alone with this problem. Hope this help.

I just figured it out for my situation (after deleting my a "turned-green" group message thread and trying to start over, which didn't work, unfortunately).

All I had to do was go into Messages on my Mac and send a message from there in the same group, and it resumed allowing my to send iMessage messages (blue bubbles) on my iPhone in the same conversation.

Hope this helps!

Oh no! I’m not sure to be honest because mine has been seemingly fine since re-enabling iMessage last night. I’m not sure what the issue is to be honest, I didn’t have the problem until I had AT&T set up my new Apple Watch 4 in cellular so I wasn’t sure at first if the issue was with that or not because didn’t use the phone until I got that’s set up because I pre-ordered them together.

Alright. I have this issue too, and have been working with senior engineers at support for 2 days! I restored and that didn't do anything. And followed some other suggestions on here. They said it's a known issue, I think they are just realizing how big it is. Andrew, the guy helping me said they are working way overtime on this. Will report back with updates.
