New iPhone XS Max “Number changed to Primary” notification in iMessage

When I send text messages to a friend who does not have an iPhone, every time I send a new message or they send a new message the message “Number changed to Primary” appears in the chat display area. It is really annoying and I can’t figure out how to turn it off.

I just upgraded to the new iPhone XS Max. It was delivered to my door, so I set it up. This problem didn’t occur on my old phone. I have logged out of my Apple ID on my old phone as well. Any idea how to fix?User uploaded file

I know this is an old post but I wanted to add how I fixed this issue in hopes of helping anyone that stumbles upon this question.

I was having the same problem. I noticed it was only happening to one specific contact so I deleted the contact completely. Did a hard reset on the phone (push and quickly release volume up button >> push and quickly release volume down button >> press and hold lock button until it shuts off). Then entered the contact in again. This solved my issue 100%.

I was able to fix it Turning off iMessage in....

Setting>iMessages>Trun off the phone>Turn it back on..

Check if you can know send a Blue or Green Message, now if you do not get any results delete the conversation and start a new conversaton......

NOW if the issues is not fixed then delete the conversation again then ask the person who you are trying to reach to text you first then you should be able to Text as you did before. ☺ let me know if it works.

Hello, I bought my brand new iPhone XS in April 2019. I also don't have a dual sim. I called Apple and they said it is a bug and they are investigating it. I told them that they have been investigating since September 2018 (cause I read a lot of complaints of the web). She said that they didn't find a solution yet and to make sure I update always my IOS. My problem is that when I start a new message, I choose the contacts, then I use the effects (bubble, balloons, etc.) then I press the blue arrow to send it. It gives me a pop up at the bottom saying: Number not available. Which number would you like to send the message with? PRIMARY or CANCEL. I tried primary then the message is sent. I tried cancel, it didn't send. Then I went in my message and deleted the message. What works for me right now is this: When I want to send effects with Message I need first just to type a phrase like: Hello. Then once that contact is in message then I go in effects and choose bubbles or confetti then it sends it (it gives me the impression that Effects doesn't recognize Contacts). It does the same thing with the giphys. I don't have 2 telephones and I'm quite upset cause I have been saving money for this brand new iPhone XS and already there is a bug. I called also my carrier Telus, and she told me that in the iPhone there is a SIM card and an E-card implemented in the iPhone itself. She said that they are not offering yet this service but Rogers does. It doesn't make sense that Apple is sending this option and when I look under Cellular - Telus - there is no option available like Primary and Secondary telephone - only Telus. I'm getting tired trying to figure out what it is but all of us is doing the same thing cause it is not functioning like it supposed to function. Apple is taking long to resolve this problem and the girl told me they don't know when it will be resolved. I'm just sad cause this was a gift to myself for my birthday July 1st and I saved my money for one year and was so happy. But when using iMessage and effects, it's like I got hit on the head and I am disappointed. Hopefully Apple will do something soon. We just need to be patient and believe it will be resolved. Sorry about my writing - I am French and my second language is English. I did my very best to explain my problem - you are not alone with this problem. Hope this help.

To Remove the "Number changed to Primary" in the messages. Go to "Find My Iphone" and make sure you remove the devices you are not using. I had a customer that was signed into 3 phones, had her go to icloud.com and sign into "Find My Iphone", once the map popped up, it showed the actual device she was using, it says "This Device", all the other unnecessary phones said "offline". I had her click on each offline phone and select "Remove from Account". Once they were removed, went to the messages to test it right away. RESOLVED
