For more empirical Wifi Data you can download the Airport Utility app (no need to actually have an Apple Airport), and follow the following instructions from https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203068 to run the scanner utility from your XS and other iOS devices at the same location to get comparative data.
The Wi-Fi scanner in AirPort Utility
Apple’s AirPort Utility includes a Wi-Fi scanner that logs the client’s view of the network. Administrators can use it to validate the client’s view of the network at a specific location.
For accurate results, use the Wi-Fi scanner on a dedicated device that’s the same model as the iOS client.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > AirPort Utility to turn on the Wi-Fi scanner.
Next, open Airport Utility and tap Wi-Fi Scan.
By default, Wi-Fi Scanner runs continuously. Use the slider to set a scan duration of up to 60 seconds.
To start the scan, tap Scan. AirPort Utility lists all the SSIDs that it finds. This includes hidden networks, which appear as "Network name unavailable."
The AirPort Utility scans all available bands at four-second intervals. Enterprise networks that have multiple access points are grouped by BSSID. The scanner shows information about:
To view a trace log of the scan results for an SSID and BSSID, tap the SSID:
The trace log shows the date and time of the scan, along with the channel and RSSI.
After the scan completes, you can share the results. Just tap the share icon (
), then choose one of these options:
AirPort Utility sends the results as a comma-separated list:

The first line is a column header that shows the SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, and date fields. To analyze or chart the results, import the list into a spreadsheet or other tool.
I'm having the same issue here but mostly with LTE and it affects me more at the office and not at home. I'm also having SMS and data issues. Apple is sending me a replacement unit, we'll see if that works.
Same issue. My Xs Max only gets two bars of reception while my iPad has a full four bars and my husband's iphone 8 plus has a full four bars. I also have very slow wifi speeds. I have to turn off the wifi at work because it won't even connect. Which wouldn't be so bad if my cellular data wasn't so poor. I really hope a software update can fix this.
I've tried this and a number of other people across the various forums tried it and said it didn't work unfortunately. I've gone through all the suggested tips and tricks and eliminated any of the other possibilities by joining only to a 5ghz network, etc. No luck.
The same issue, just got my t-mobile iPhone XS Max and the cell reception is far worth, living in NYC my previous 8plus would catch almost full signal on all subway station, today going home I could not get a signal on any station.
I have tried setting my phone up as new after resetting all settings. It should be as though it was a new phone set up as new straight out of the box. Still getting poor reception/signal. And, even if You restore from the cloud as opposed to restoring from iTunes, that’s still a software issue that Apple should fix. I even made sure that my carrier settings were up to date. Still getting a poor 5GHz connection that fails over to the 2.4GHz SSID on my xfinity router after a bit. Earlier today I went on a long drive about 70 miles away from home, and had very poor LTE signal the entire time. Most of that time I was and of 4G connection when there should be strong LTE connection everywhere. I just tweeted at the Apple Support Twitter account, too. For how large this issue is, something needs to be done. And it’s clear through all of the comments in this forum that plenty of people have tried plenty of different things to correct this issue, but still nothing. If it turns out to be a hardware issue, there should still be a way to tweak the baseband settings to possibly fix this.
Very encouraging. Someone from Apple Support just called. Going to generate some logs for them and try getting a screen recording of the issue. Not sure what I’ll record other than the xFi iOS app showing that it’s failed over to the 2.4GHz network from the 5GHz network. But he asked for my router model and stuff. One of the best things about Apple is their support.
Maybe but if they cannot fix this with a software update, I'm pretty sure they'll honor replacing it or giving you a refund if the issue cannot be resolved, even if you are later than the given return date. That would be a PR disaster for them if they didn't.
Let’s give Apple a minute to fix this right. I was just emailed a logging profile, and whenever I can duplicate the issue (reliably) I can get them the needed log files and they can go over them in detail. I’m sure I’m one of 1,000’s, maybe more, that are also trying to do something to fix this as opposed to blindly complaining online. Apple is no slouch when it comes to PR. The alternative is Android or going back to an inferior phone. And besides the slowness, the iPhone XS Max is crazy amazing. I’m holding out for a software fix so I can truly enjoy this thing. And geez, it’s not like 2.4GHz is BAD. It just should be way better. And it will be.

They didn't do this for the iPhone 4 anntena-gate problems. All they gave people was a case. So I personally wouldn't bet on that.
Could be. Of course they'd prefer to fix it via an update if they can. But if it turns out to be a hardware problem that can't be solved via an update which some are speculating (although we don't know for sure until more investigation happens) then I'm not sure they'd blanket refund people or offer a full swap on some updated hardware. But, I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong if turned out to be true. In any event, fingers crossed it can be resolved via an update.
I wish Apple would publicly acknowledge the issue. Otherwise I think many folks (me included) will return their phones within the 14 day refund window.
My XS's wifi performance is unacceptable and a replacement phone had the same issues.
Apple reached out to me as well. Follow up tomorrow for logs, troubleshooting etc. my experience is not as bad as others, I can hook up to my WiFi, but LTE is lacking horribly. If I can’t use the phone as intended what’s the point. I will go back to my X. I tried the network reset and gained speed for about 20 minutes and then back to lag and video interruptions, no loads etc.
Just returned my XS Max to the apple store for a refund and now using my 7 Plus.
Had a phone call from Apple support in regards to my post complaining about the wifi issues.
Apple support are looking into the problems raised here so if you get a phone call from them please help them out.
Also having troubles connecting to the 5ghz WiFi here. When I look it is only connected to the 2.4ghz which is extremely congested here. Most of my other devises can't even get a signal the next room over on 2.4.
Add mine and my wife’s iPhone XS Max’sto the list. It will not stay connected to 5ghz Wi-Fi even though I am sitting right next to the router. iPhone X did not have this problem, nor does either of my iPads. I’m on AT&T and have the 64 gb versions
