iPhone XS Max Weak 5GHz WIFI Reception
I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.

For more empirical Wifi Data you can download the Airport Utility app (no need to actually have an Apple Airport), and follow the following instructions from https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203068 to run the scanner utility from your XS and other iOS devices at the same location to get comparative data.
The Wi-Fi scanner in AirPort Utility
Apple’s AirPort Utility includes a Wi-Fi scanner that logs the client’s view of the network. Administrators can use it to validate the client’s view of the network at a specific location.
For accurate results, use the Wi-Fi scanner on a dedicated device that’s the same model as the iOS client.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > AirPort Utility to turn on the Wi-Fi scanner.
Next, open Airport Utility and tap Wi-Fi Scan.
By default, Wi-Fi Scanner runs continuously. Use the slider to set a scan duration of up to 60 seconds.
To start the scan, tap Scan. AirPort Utility lists all the SSIDs that it finds. This includes hidden networks, which appear as "Network name unavailable."
The AirPort Utility scans all available bands at four-second intervals. Enterprise networks that have multiple access points are grouped by BSSID. The scanner shows information about:
To view a trace log of the scan results for an SSID and BSSID, tap the SSID:
The trace log shows the date and time of the scan, along with the channel and RSSI.
After the scan completes, you can share the results. Just tap the share icon (
), then choose one of these options:
AirPort Utility sends the results as a comma-separated list:
SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, time
"ACES", "18:64:72
3:E9:40", "-57", "11", "12:02:03 PM"
"Cuba", "F8:1E
F:F9:56:BC", "-53", "149", "12:02:03 PM"
"ACES", "18:64:72
3:E9:50", "-63", "149", "12:02:03 PM"
"Cuba", "F8:1E
F:F9:56:BB", "-69", "11", "12:02:03 PM"
"ACES", "18:64:72
3:E9:40", "-67", "11", "12:02:07 PM"
The first line is a column header that shows the SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, and date fields. To analyze or chart the results, import the list into a spreadsheet or other tool.
I think Apple is not address the issue because if they do then the connectivity issues become REAL. They are also hopping that over time users will forget and accept them because they have kept the phone well over the return period waiting for Apple to fix it.
I have same problem with my iPhone Xs. Every device in two room apartment gets full bars of WiFi but not the iPhone. No change since iOS12.1
This phone COSTS WAY TOO MUCH MONEY TO NOT WORK CORRECTLY!!
I finally decided to send my Xs to Apple today. They wanted to do some on site testing with it. Will get a new unit in a few days. I’ll report back here on whether the new unit has the same issues or not.
I just got my new 12.9 iPad Pro and all is good. Great WiFi speeds and cell connection. The same for my iPhone XS Max. With two devices having a connection problem I would have to suspect something local to your environment. I know that’s not a solution but it suggests something that can be addressed on your end. Good luck.
The models mentioned in this link are A1920 for XS & A1921 for XS MAX , does this mean that others are not affected ?
Also the post is since 12 sep which is before the launch of the device i guess

Great insight. Thank you. But why hasn’t this become a more public issue like antenae gate? This should be all over the press. $1200 phones not up to par.
Probably because there are now millions of iPhone Xs and Xs Max users out there having no issue with Wifi. They're not here on a thread about it, because they are just out using their phones without issue.
I have a XS A1920. While I am at home I get 2 bars of WiFi but even though is only 2 bars my connection is super strong. I watch TV, YouTube videos and browse other websites that I use to watch some shows with no problem. I even do Skype, Facebook and WhatsApp to talk to friends out of this country with absolutely no problem. My phone has never dropped a call. However, when I am at work I get 4 bars of WiFi. I think it is weird as I have a good internet speed with xfinity I believe it is 250. In regards LTE I always get 3 or 4 bars, again my phone has never dropped a call and I always have good internet under LTE. My carrier is Verizon. In the beginning I thought it was an issue that I had 2 bars of WiFi at home but then I noticed that it didn’t matter as my phone was fast. I had a friend at home with a iPhone 8 Plus and we compared both phones and my phone was faster like by a second, even though it had 2 bars of WiFi and his had 4 full bars. We both thought it was very weird! But we are not tech engineers so we both know nothing. However, I do think having 2 bars is not normal.
The fewer bars of the WiFi symbol in certain locations caused me to think I might have a problem at first. Then I realized other than those bars my performance is identical or better than my previous phones. No cellular issues whatsoever. So I ignore it. The phone, an XS Max, works as well or better than my iPhone 7.
Exactly. I could care less what the bars show. The reality is I'm getting better performance out of my Xs Max than I've ever gotten with any other iPhone. So I don't pay attention to the bars and just enjoy using my phone.
I see similar results. Never noticed it with my 7plus. I wouldn’t mind it much if it switched between 5 and 2.4 QUICKLY, but that handoff seems to take a lot of time when getting outside the 5ghz coverage area.
THIS... This is basically been the issue. When it does fail over from the 5GHz band to the 2.4GHz band, there's a very very long lag, as if the Phone was frozen or there was just no connection at all..
I am still having major issues when st home connected to WiFi. I have split my bands on my router and that hasn’t helped much at all. We live in a rural area, so our internet speed is 12mb. When I go to my sisters house where she has a speed of 100mb, I have absolutely no problems at all on her WiFi.
I have talked to Verizon a few times about this, and am beyond my 14 day return period. I have chatted several times with their higher level tech support and nobody seems to know what to do. They say it’s a problem with my router. But my router is brand new, and we had our service provider come out and check everything including my router settings and all of it looks good. And, none of our other devices have any trouble connecting and staying connected. It is just our 2 new XS’s. It is so frustrating!!! I have never had an issue with an iPhone before now.
Our phones always show that they are connected to WiFi, but they seem to lose connection and just hang there forever. Even if I switch from one band to the other. Or turn WiFi off and on.
The more I deal with this frustrating XS freezing up on WiFi, or dropping off of my WiFi, the more annoyed I get. This phone is practically worthless to me when I am at home on WiFi.
But before this phone I had the 8 plus. And I am now remembering that I was having this problem with my 8 plus also. Maybe with the last or second to last version of iOS 11. It had seemed to drop off of WiFi whenever it wanted also. But it started with one of those last two iOS updates. That phone worked flawlessly until then. So, could it be that the people working on this problem aren’t looking back far enough to find where it went wrong?
Just adding my XS Max to the list. Just had a brand new 1.5gbps Internet connection and my phone is stuck at 2.4GHz speed. This is ridiculous the first time I'm deeply annoyed and disappointed in an Apple product.
Let's stay tune for a potential fix.
I have been dealing with this since I got my phone the weekend of its release. I’m honestly, disgusted with how this has been handled by apple. I have exchanged the phone 5 times spent 30+ hours waiting for genius appointments and on the phone with senior advisors to address this issue. After all that I get told, “they’re working on it” I am out $1500 on a phone that doesn’t work as good as my old iPhone 7. I am also out another $40 bucks cause they won’t give me a new screen protector after replacing the device. Meanwhile my girlfriends Apple Watch breaks and they gave her AirPods. I wish I never bought this phone, I won’t be trusting apple again after this.
