iPhone XS Max Weak 5GHz WIFI Reception

I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.

For more empirical Wifi Data you can download the Airport Utility app (no need to actually have an Apple Airport), and follow the following instructions from https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203068 to run the scanner utility from your XS and other iOS devices at the same location to get comparative data.
The Wi-Fi scanner in AirPort Utility
Apple’s AirPort Utility includes a Wi-Fi scanner that logs the client’s view of the network. Administrators can use it to validate the client’s view of the network at a specific location.
For accurate results, use the Wi-Fi scanner on a dedicated device that’s the same model as the iOS client.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > AirPort Utility to turn on the Wi-Fi scanner.
User uploaded file
Next, open Airport Utility and tap Wi-Fi Scan.
User uploaded file
By default, Wi-Fi Scanner runs continuously. Use the slider to set a scan duration of up to 60 seconds.
User uploaded file
To start the scan, tap Scan. AirPort Utility lists all the SSIDs that it finds. This includes hidden networks, which appear as "Network name unavailable."
User uploaded file
The AirPort Utility scans all available bands at four-second intervals. Enterprise networks that have multiple access points are grouped by BSSID. The scanner shows information about:

  • SSID
  • BSSID
  • Last RSSI
  • Channel
  • Last Time Found

To view a trace log of the scan results for an SSID and BSSID, tap the SSID:
User uploaded file
The trace log shows the date and time of the scan, along with the channel and RSSI.
After the scan completes, you can share the results. Just tap the share icon (User uploaded file), then choose one of these options:

  • AirDrop
  • Message
  • Mail
  • Copy

AirPort Utility sends the results as a comma-separated list:
SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, time
"ACES", "18:64:72User uploaded file3:E9:40", "-57", "11", "12:02:03 PM"
"Cuba", "F8:1EUser uploaded fileF:F9:56:BC", "-53", "149", "12:02:03 PM"
"ACES", "18:64:72User uploaded file3:E9:50", "-63", "149", "12:02:03 PM"
"Cuba", "F8:1EUser uploaded fileF:F9:56:BB", "-69", "11", "12:02:03 PM"
"ACES", "18:64:72User uploaded file3:E9:40", "-67", "11", "12:02:07 PM"
The first line is a column header that shows the SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, and date fields. To analyze or chart the results, import the list into a spreadsheet or other tool.

My new iPad Pro and iPhone xs max keeps kicking me off wifi or won’t allow me to sign on with my password. I also have to be right in front of the wifi for my devices to connect. I’ve been an iPhone and iPad user for many years and this is the first time I’ve had an issue like this. I wish I kept last year’s model of the iPad Pro and my iPhone x. Really hoping that Apple fixes these issues quickly, with an update! I’m hoping it’s just a software issue and not a hardware one.

Today for the first time in quite a while I had to use my iPhone 7 out of my apartment. My Max is my primary phone and the 7 stays at home. But today it was the 7 I was using with Maps for navigation. In my area the att network is weak but not normally a problem with WiFi calling in my apartment and the Max doesn’t have an issue away from the apartment. Well the 7 couldn’t load any Maps data to allow me to navigate. I had to drive about a mile or so before it got a strong enough signal to load the directions.

So this was the first time I could make such a comparison between the two phones. And my Max is far superior to the 7 in being able to download data over a less than ideal cell signal. I had not expected there to be such a difference. In my apartment over WiFi there doesn’t seem to be any difference but my apartment is fairly small. But as far as a cell/data connection there’s no comparison.

Please add me in this affected group.

I am facing two major problems:

a) My iPhone won't connect to 5GHz network. I am on iOS 12.1.2 beta 1.

b) Poor LTE connectivity. It has happened couple of times that I am using google maps while driving and lost data connectivity. Searching network or 1 or 2 bars are already common scenario on my phone. I am very frustrated.

I contacted apple support and they are telling me to check with router manufacturer or carrier to see if my router supports iPhone XS max. Great, now i should have bought a router also to support my iPhone XS max. I have 2 android devices and 2 Laptops, all of them can easily connect to 5 Ghz network whereas this 1200 USD phone is struggling.

It is very annoying and frustrating.

Vey bad apple. You don't shy away from charging so much of money and deliver a phone with so much of basic ( wifi and lte) issues.

I haven’t seen any difference in my Max with any of the updates. Cell network connection is far superior to my iPhone 7. WiFi connection is essentially equal to the 7. I have just now added an AirPort Extreme to extend my WiFi into an area that was a problem spot because of plumbing, microwave, wiring and walls. The Max picks up and switches seamlessly between the 2 routers and grabs the stronger of the 2.5 or the 5 network. I’m extremely pleased. But again I really had no problems previously so I can’t say that the software changed anything.

Since you're telling us with issues that our phones work perfectly fine, I really would like to have your expert opinion on what router setting I can change to make it work again. With my iPhone 8 I get about 100 Mbit/s, with my iPhone 8 Plus I get about 100 Mbit/s, with my iPad Air 2 I get about 100 Mbit/s, with my iPad Pro 10.5 I get about 100 Mbit/s. With my XS (actually tried two) I only get about half that speed, and if I walk into the kitchen it loses the connection entirely but my other devices keep working properly. I have tried four different routers on four different networks on four different locations.

Thanks!

Dont know the issue (might be network) but it cant be the phone.....

my wife’s phone and my daughters phone are the exact same xs just different colors. One has 3-4 bars in our living room and the other one just 1. Speed tests done next to each other one pulls north of 100 the other one barely 35, same with LTE. But of course HAS to be the network settings, carrier or software related. Oh and yes, since the reply given always here would be “is it the same version?” “Clean install?” -Yes, to both or the always present “tried resetting your network settings” also yes.

Agreed. But to clarify, I wasn't looking at just signal strength or bars. I was testing throughput too along with spot testing with apps and general usage. I've been using various tools and also just trying to load pages and youtube, etc. When connected to the weaker AP, basically stuff doesn't load or grinds to a halt. Even on my internal network when trying to play files off a share or using Plex, etc. Throughput drops to < 10 mpbs. It's pretty easy to see it's struggling. I don't rely on all of those metrics only to tell me somethings wrong. It's just to get an idea of big swings or what's going on and clearly there are problems.
