I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.

For more empirical Wifi Data you can download the Airport Utility app (no need to actually have an Apple Airport), and follow the following instructions from https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203068 to run the scanner utility from your XS and other iOS devices at the same location to get comparative data.
The Wi-Fi scanner in AirPort Utility
Apple’s AirPort Utility includes a Wi-Fi scanner that logs the client’s view of the network. Administrators can use it to validate the client’s view of the network at a specific location.
For accurate results, use the Wi-Fi scanner on a dedicated device that’s the same model as the iOS client.
On your iOS device, go to Settings > AirPort Utility to turn on the Wi-Fi scanner.
Next, open Airport Utility and tap Wi-Fi Scan.
By default, Wi-Fi Scanner runs continuously. Use the slider to set a scan duration of up to 60 seconds.
To start the scan, tap Scan. AirPort Utility lists all the SSIDs that it finds. This includes hidden networks, which appear as "Network name unavailable."
The AirPort Utility scans all available bands at four-second intervals. Enterprise networks that have multiple access points are grouped by BSSID. The scanner shows information about:
To view a trace log of the scan results for an SSID and BSSID, tap the SSID:
The trace log shows the date and time of the scan, along with the channel and RSSI.
After the scan completes, you can share the results. Just tap the share icon (
), then choose one of these options:
AirPort Utility sends the results as a comma-separated list:
SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, time

The first line is a column header that shows the SSID, BSS, RSSI, Channel, and date fields. To analyze or chart the results, import the list into a spreadsheet or other tool.
I sympathize with the issues you’re having. But hardware? My Max and many, many others have had no such issues at least since the early software and carrier updates. Mine is a launch day device. Directly comparing it to the iPhone 7 I still have, it blows the 7 away in cellular connections. WiFi is essentially the same, at least equal in every area I’ve checked and better in some. I would hope you could figure this out but after 8! phones this is not the device for you.
I have the same problem. Both Wifi AND Cellreception is weaker than on other iPhones.
Hopefully Apple can adress this with en SW update?
My iPhone XS max has worse WIFI performance than my 7+. I have tried all the fixes so far but my 5ghz coverage is less wide and speeds are slower. I hope Apple fixes this.
Thank you so much! That helped with the WiFi issue. It’s defi faster on 2.4 ghz. Apple needs to fix this ASAP!
You're holding it wrong...
Gold star for you for that reference.
I have the XS Max. My phone won't even connect to my 5GHz network. It tries but then fails. Everythingelse in my house, even iphones, can connect with no issue.
My iPhone XS Max also loses the WiFi signal and I have to turn it on and off for the signal to come back! So much for $1,600...I do think that this will be my very last iPhone...
I have the same issue. My husbands iPhone 6 has more bars than my xs max. For the price of these new phones apple needs to hurry up and fix this issue!
Same thing for already called carrier, two bars my iPhone 8plus was so much stronger, I truly hope Apple has a fix for this, already had issues with calls and recep
Actually I see that my account profile does have my home phone number, so that's where they got that. Still curious if anyone else is getting the call and if there's anything phis-y with the call.
Add me to the list of XSM owners with connectivity issues (both cellular and WiFi).
In English please do I really have to do all these steps for this new phone my X worked better than this Xs max
