IOS 12 combining text messages

After updating to IOS 12 my IPhone is combining text messages from family members. My wife and I had a text going and then my daughter got added to it & then my son got added. Each phone has only their number under IMessage as a Send/Receive and each person can only see the messages they send and my response. I can see all the messages from each person and my response. When my wife sends a text it has her name but once my son or daughter send their text the text message changes to their name. We only have one Apple ID for the family but i've been reading that might be the problem. Under Apple ID their are a bunch of number listed including my wife, son, and daughter's numbers so I was thinking about deleting them from my Apple ID but I don't want them to lose any text messages or other information.

A Phone number is not an account or Apple ID

Sharing an Apple ID is what is causing messages to merge. Sharing Apple IDs is not supported by Apple, it not supposed to be done, and things like this will happen unless you separate them.

When an Apple ID is shared, the system, automatically thinks the devices belong to the same person and will merge things since to the system and the way Apple designed in an Apple ID uniquely identifies a single person.

Apple has always expected people to have their own Apple Id and not share it. So any updates and software changes depart from that assumption. Sharing an Apple ID can lead to many unintended consequences.

Unless you wish to continue to have issues every time something changes in iOS, its best to get them separate Apple IDs.

So this problem just arose for me after sharing a family account for over 10 years, again due to this update. After a lot of reading and trial and error, I seem to have solved this solution for my family (somehow we figured this out being hundreds of miles apart across 6 devices).

First, we made sure that all accounts were not directly connected to the apple id for contact purposes. This means going into Settings>Messages>Send & Receive> and making sure the apple Id was logged out and only the phone number of the device was selected. This process was also done for FaceTime. I also turned off iMessage to avoid any more problems from here, although this did not solve the problem and texts were still merging.

Second, I deleted any trace of the numbers/contact information from the contacts whose messages were merging into one thread. Again, because of a shared account, iCloud and apps were picking up their contact information even after simply deleting all traces of them in the contacts app. Also, the individual text message thread (of the merging contacts) was deleted (all group chats did not seem to have an issue).

Last, I restarted my phone by pressing the power and menu buttons. Once turned on, I individually messaged each contact, again, with iMessage off just to be safe, and it worked. Finally two separate threads.

Hopefully this can help other people, not sure if its a perfect solutions, but as the "tech-y" family member, I played around and solved it for us. Good luck!

I also have to disagree. While I did create separate Apple IDs for my whole family and it did correct the issue with my family, there are others outside of my family who share apple IDs. I have no control over what they do and thus the problem still persists. Those people would have no reason to change as the issue may not effect them unless there are more than 2 users sharing an account, but it would effect me and combine their messages. This is a widespread issue that I do not think apple would knowingly create just to prove a point that people should not share Apple IDs.
