IOS 12 combining text messages

I'm not sure how many times we need to say this. Apple is not likely to fix this, because to them it is not an issue.

If you have done the separation correctly and Messages, Facetime and iCloud are now logged in with each person's Apple ID on each of their devices there should be no more issues.

Of course if you have contacts that are still sharing Apple IDs this will continue to happen with them.

If for some reason, messages are still being sent to multiple contacts when Separate Apple IDs have been created and logged in to the relevant devices then you must have done something wrong. Something must still be connecting them. Likely iCloud.

I have in fact fixed this issue for some friends if mine which were sharing an Apple ID, and after all has been separated it works now as intended.

I spent forever on the phone today with Apple Support about this issue. I was assured that a permanent fix is in the works, but for those who do not want to wait, here is the solution they walked me through:

Update your phone to the newest version of iOS 12 (I think it’s iOS 12.0.1)

Turn off any email addresses you are sharing iMessages with

Delete the texting thread of both contacts that are being combined

Test the repair by sending each contact a text

This worked for me, but I was sad to loose my text threads. I was told this problem is not related to sharing an Apple ID, but it is a problem with Family Share. My husband and I share an Apple ID. We got our daughter her own Apple ID about a year ago. The text thread that was being combined was my daughter’s and my husband’s. After a decade of Apple purchases, getting her her own Apple ID and transferring purchases was a huge pain. I spoke to a senior support person. She in no way encouraged me to separate my Apple ID from my husband’s. I hope this helps.

Well, my phone is working perfectly now. Text messages are going to the proper person, and we don’t have to deal with getting separate Apple ID’s (which does not solve the problem anyway). So, I’d say the information I got worked for me. It must be nice to know more than a senior level employee with Apple Support.

When you use Family Sharing you can set each child with the option "Ask to Buy." That way you will get a message saying they want to purchase or download an app. You can then approve or decline it. Also, you can set app limits by using Screen Time. However, if you are all sharing an ID then your Screen Time statistics won't help any and any restrictions you set up for apps will combine the time from all devices using that app.

Yep. Right now the only way I can txt my daughter is in a group chat. If I txt her individually it wants to go to my son.

Just like any other product, if you want it to function properly, you must follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
