Buzzing Earpiece iPhone Xs

When my iPhone Xs is at max volume during phone calls I often hear a high pitched “buzzing” or “crackling” sound coming from the earpiece when the person on the other end of the call is talking.

Has anyone else been experiencing this problem?

Just to update, I brought my phone in to the Apple Store with this issue and they swapped it out for a new one but the new one is having the exact same problem.

I decided to test other iPhone Xs models that were in store and all of them had the exact same issue from the earpiece/receiver when playing audio at high volumes (especially things like piano music).

I'm convinced this represents a hardware problem and will be returning the phone this week. I love everything else about the phone, but unfortunately, I need it to function well as a phone.

same problem. replaced the display, but nothing has changed. the service center said that they can not do anything more and need to wait for corrections, but in the Russian support they say that they do not know about this problem, so they will not fix anything. I hope that the United States recognizes that running a marriage and begin to take some kind of action.

apple does not care as you can see this is issue not widely spread. The worst part is that they refuse to help. I had 5 times in the service, still only blew off the speaker, what helped in system sounds for approx one month but during calls it is still sh.t. 2 times they admit the fault. Now waiting for 3rd and get my money back- for that amount i can buy two phones same quality with another customer service...wonder why are people admiring these phones..maybe in the past. Not nowadays.

I just tried (and failed) to reproduce the reported problem on my XS Max (A2101). At maximum volume with no speech on the line (I phoned myself from another phone) I can hear a little white noise (hiss) but it is very low level and unobtrusive. I'm not sure if that was noise in the audio amplifier at max gain or amplified background on the incoming signal, but it would not be noticeable if I wasn't listening specifically for it. In a second test with normal conversation it was only noticeable when the other person was not speaking (but their voice was also uncomfortably loud at max volume). So... either a difference between US and Rest of World models, or... your guess is as good as mine.

I have the exact same A2101 model 256GB and all of them i tested were the same model.

Try this, put maximum volume and go through some default ringtones like “Opening” (which for me i can hear it crackle 3-4 times during the ringtone) or any other music that has piano notes, even try piano music on YouTube at maximum volume and listen to the earpiece.

It will crackle horribly.

Same here, i was thinking about replacing my iPhone but it seems it's a wide spread problem. The noise is kiling me,it happens on speaker calls and normal calls on higher than 50 percent volume. It seems it's the frequency of the sound that's important, since it happens when you are in a chat on telegram app and when that person sends you a reply that specific sound is having that noise too. It's killing me since this phone is a lot of money. And I'm sensitive to this stuff. Just had a phone which I'm not going to name which was working better than a 1100 dollars iphone in managing this stuff but since it doesn't happen in music apps and stuff i bet it can be rectified with software, hardware problem happens everywhere but this is specific to certain situations. We need to go on media like the 10 second stutter that went viral

Ok it seems it was the case with iPhone 8 too

Exact problem. We need to go to support and get as much as info as we can. The problem is there from some time ago and apple is doing nothing. Which is a shame. If anyone had an update about this issue let us know

Just an update. Last posted on 12/19/18 to say I was having the same issue with my XS Max. I've been watching this thread since. Made my way through support layers and was offered a new phone. Seeing that hasn't helped anyone else here I opted to keep this one and asked them to keep my case open. The crackling/distortion seems to happen when the caller on the other end has a lot of background noise or is speaking loudly. Fortunately, it only happens every couple of weeks or so for me but is still annoying and completely stalls the conversation. Apple needs to acknowledge the issue and make it right, especially at the price point we're paying for these devices.

I am using the developer betas and sending them feedback constantly about the issue.

The most annoying part is that even the default ringtones like “Opening” will crackle a bit at maximum volume from the earpiece.

To replicate the issue even better, go on YouTube and listen some piano music at maximum volume, it will crackle horribly.

Yes, the issue was present on iPhone 8 Plus also and was fixed with a software update and the same could be done on our XS’s if Apple will realize this is a widespread issue.

They just need to tone down a certain frequency and it won’t affect the maximum volume at all.

If enough people will provide feedback to Apple, i’m certain this will be sorted quickly.

Not sure what you tried to reproduce but it’s not the problem described here.

I refer to the original problem referenced in the first post of this thread, namely...

When my iPhone Xs is at max volume during phone calls I often hear a high pitched “buzzing” or “crackling” sound coming from the earpiece when the person on the other end of the call is talking.

That is exactly what I attempted to replicate, without success. However, it appears that there are now multiple different issues being discussed under the banner <I have the same problem>.

I hate to disillusion you, but the earpiece (top center of the display) is not used by ringtones. Ringtones use the speaker at the bottom of the display.

Any speaker will start to distort if it is driven with too much power (excessive input signal), and in the worst case the speaker itself may be damaged. There are two possible solutions - user to turn down the audio gain (volume of the speaker) so it does not distort, -OR- Apple to impose a restriction on the available amplification to the speaker so even stupid users feeding over-modulated signals will not get distortion or hearing damage.

Is anyone here in contact with Apple support?i mean providing data and logs and... Or be in contact with high level supports or engineers? I want to know that they know this issue exists or not. Every day this noise issue is killing me. Totally unacceptable for a company like apple and a phone like this which costs this amount of money. Because of this issue i might migrate to some android counterparts.

I contacted support myself. They just dully noted the issue!

Wow,and yet they don't care! I sent an email to appleinsider, macrumors, phonearena to see what happens. It's not just during calls it's system wide, with specific sound frequencies, piano music and some apps like telegram when a new message arrives when you are in chat with that person, they need to tune the earpiece i don't know why they don't acknowledge this issue like iPhone 8.

Nearly 300 people here said me too! And no body cares.

Mar 18, 2019 5:40 AM in response to shayan_al

This is becoming ridiculous already for the price we pay for these premium devices.

Oh and on top of that Apple keeps removing my comments here where i encourage others to report the problem via their own website!

I keep reporting the issue myself through the developers beta i have installed on my device and through their feedback form on Apple website.
