EtreCheck Report HELP...

I was recently told about this program to help figure out the problems with my computer but I have no clue what this all means. Can anyone help me decipher my report?

I will look into how to remove the adware, its a fee through etre though right?

EtreCheck is free from the Apple App Store, but you may be right in that you would have to pay a small fee if you want to use it to actually remove adware. I use the paid EtreCheck Pro version, which you can get directly from the EtreCheck website. Regardless the fee is minimal and, in my opinion, well worth it as you come to rely on it for troubleshooting potential Mac problems. The other option is to try Malwarebytes for Mac as I mentioned in my first reply. They provide a free trial version that should work.

Also, if the harddive has an issue... will that get better once I fix everything or is that something I should have apple look at?

I would suggest that you exhaust the "free" tools you have available to you already built-in macOS. Only if they actually find anything would I suggest that this can either be a DIY project or have Apple help you with a replacement. We can help you through the steps if a replacement is necessary.

Here are, at least, three steps you can try to verify your Mac's disk drive integrity:

  1. Run Apple Diagnostics to uncover any hardware issues with your Mac.
  2. Boot up your Mac in Recovery or Internet Recovery Mode.

What: About macOS Recovery- Apple Support

    How:

    • For Recovery Mode: Immediately after pressing the power button, hold down the <command><R> keys until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  3. For Internet Recovery Mode: Immediately after pressing the power button, hold down the <option><command><R> keys until the spinning globe appears on the screen.
    • When at the initial Recovery Mode screen, select the Disk Utility option. Run Disk Utility > First Aid to verify the startup disk's integrity.

    • Why: To verify the startup disk integrity using the Disk Utility's First Aid option.
  4. Boot up your Mac in Single-User Mode.

    What:

  5. Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
    • How Can I Repair My Hard Drive If My Mac Won't Start? - Lifewire

    • How: At the command prompt, type:/sbin/fsck -fy<return>

If fsck makes any repairs, you will get a message that says: Files System was modified. If you do, run fsck again until the "The volume <volumename> appears to be OK."

  6. Exit messages:
    • Issues found = "File system was modified"
    • No issues found = "The volume <name> appears to be OK"
  • Typerebootat the prompt to exit Single-User Mode.
  • Why: To attempt to repair the startup drive.

Your Mac appears to be running a number of remote access programs. TeamViewer, Cisco's AnyConnect, etc. If you don't really need them, I would suggest that you consider removing them. EtreCheck has already pointed out TeamViewer which you may have attempted to uninstall already, but it left remnants on your system that should be removed as well.

Although you can upgrade the RAM on your notebook, it's the hard drive that is having issues.

The drive's read/write speeds are dismal at best. You also have the opportunity to do a "clean" install of macOS which just may get rid of any cruft left over from multiple OS upgrades and improve the overall performance ... however, I would do so as part of hard drive replacement process.

    User uploaded file

I would also suggest that you remove the Wondershare iTunes Helper app.

I'm sorry, but I can't say for sure. I'm not familiar with Carbonite.

I know that there is a bug in Dropbox that causes it to look at every file system event on your system, not just events in your Dropbox folder. I am guessing that Carbonite works in a similar fashion. Carbonite, however, should be looking at all file system events.

These kinds of active file system monitoring events are going to negatively impact EtreCheck's performance results. They will also negatively impact any other process that needs to access the disk. That, in turn, is a primary cause of a slow machine and beach balling. EtreCheck's performance test are going to magnify that behaviour. Your EtreCheck report does show some noticeable nominal I/O. That means something was using your disk before EtreCheck started.

I'm afraid it is a bit of a catch-22. Any software you run is going to slow down the machine a little bit, depending on what the software does. If this software is always running in the background, then something like EtreCheck is going to report a lower performance than it would otherwise. However, the disk performance for that machine is quite poor. I don't think DropBox and Carbonite are sufficient to explain it. One of my test machine for EtreCheck is a 2008 MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM and the oldest, slowest hard drive I have. That machine has a disk write speed faster than yours and a filesystem speed about 3 times faster. I really think a 2013 iMac should do better than that, even with DropBox and Carbonite installed.

I could not fine the wondershare itunes helper app, even when i did a search. I also did a hard restart as metioned above and did the apple diagnostics... it came back with no issues and code ADP000. I just downloaded the high sierra OS last week, I am not sure what the difference is. I was running 10.10 before I installed. I needed to upgrade to download the Adobe cloud, that is what started this whole mess. LOL However, after cleaning up all the files and removing the items the check recommended... it is moving a bit faster and doable. But knowing something is really wrong with my hard drive does worry me.

    Sep 24, 2018 4:30 PM in response to jaymer79

First thing I would recommend is to either use the Disk Utility app, or better still an app, like Carbon Copy Cloner, to make a complete bootable clone copy of your Mac's internal drive to an external one ... just in case the current drive fails. Keep this up to date periodically and you can always quickly recover to a "working" system when such failures do occur.

Next, you can certainly continue to use Carbonite as your incremental backup solution if you trust having your data on the Internet. Be aware that any Internet-based backup solution will require that your Mac can access the Internet ... so you could be in trouble trying to perform restores when it can't. Another advantage of having a clone copy. Also, Internet backups will be slower and take up system resources while they are running.

Finally, you decide, whether or not, to replace your current drive. You have the option to replace it with either a HDD or SSD, the latter being much faster for accessing ... but more costly per GB of storage space.

This can either be a DIY project or have Apple help you out, albeit Apple's method may be restrictive to the replacement drive choices. Your iMac is still supported but will come at an out-of-warranty rate.

If you decide to give the DIY option a go, here's a good source (& procedure) for doing so: OWC DIY Drive Upgrade/Install Kits for Apple iMac Models

Thank you so much... I will look into how to remove the adware, its a fee through etre though right? Also, if the harddive has an issue... will that get better once I fix everything or is that something I should have apple look at? I just started a new job and had to update my OS in order to download Adobe Creative Suite and this has caused so many problems. I am going crazy!!! LOL

Oh wow... thank you so much. I actually didn't try to remove with etre but did use the malwarebytes and got everything off. I am using carbonite all the time for backup but dropbox is just randomly being used. So you suggest to unistall them both completely then run another scan? nothing should change with carbonite right, i can install again and not loose any backup?

EtreCheck will help you remove adware without paying any money. Version 5.0 is a new release and I need to figure out a better way to present the free and paid features. If you didn't realize you could remove the adware for free, that's something for me to fix.

Unfortunately, I think Tesserax is correct. Your hard drive does not look good. EtreCheck 5 has more detailed hard drive information available. Your machine reports the following:

    Performance:

    System Load: 1.65 (1 min ago) 1.82 (5 min ago) 1.94 (15 min ago)

    Nominal I/O speed: 2.42 MB/s

File system: 123.89 seconds (timed out)

    Write speed: 34 MB/s

    Read speed: 47 MB/s

Your files system and write speed are below minimum acceptable values. They are worse than anything I have seen in EtreCheck 5 so far.

It is possible that software like Dropbox and Carbonite (and the adware) and really hurting your performance.

If possible, try to uninstall those apps, even if only temporarily, and post a new EtreCheck report afterwards.
