imessage problem

Hi Everybody. My son and I share an Apple ID. We both have an iPhone 7 and we both updated to the latest IOS when it was first released. Until yesterday afternoon I could iMessage him and he could iMessage me. However now when we try to iMessage each other the iMessage goes to my wife - she has her own Apple ID. However, if I iMessage both my son and my wife in a group iMessage my wife and son will both get the message. It only happens when I try to iMessage him individually that it goes to my wife instead of my son. Please help. Thank you.

iPhone 7, iOS 12

In Contacts, do you all have separate contacts cards? Is your son's information listed on your wife's card. This seems to be happening to others using IOS 12. You might want to consider getting you son his own Apple ID.

There may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. Also set up Family Sharing to keep access to your apps.
