Mojave - "An error occurred installing macOS" error

I am trying to upgrade my 2018 MacBook Pro 15" from High Sierra to Mojave, but it says "An error occurred installing macOS" at the very end of the installation. I got this MacBook Pro about a month ago. How can I update to Mojave successfully?

I am an iOS app developer and know pretty well about Mac.

Try resetting the SMC first. How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Finally managed to install it after numerous SMC resets, etc.

What I did is:

1) In network configuration, disable all "automatic proxy detection", custom DNSes, stop dnsmasq service (local dns)

2) Turn off any VPN software

3) Shutdown and SMC reset

4) Before logging into my account, I've logged into Disk Manager and unlocked it (my disk is encrypted)

5) Logged into main account and finally managed to upgrade.

MY EXPERIENCE:

Two days of struggling, tried many things such as

- 2 hours phone call with Apple Support (without result)

- 7 times download 5GB file

- deactivate firewall

- reset PRAM

- reset SMC

- turn on VPN, turn off VPN

- DNS change

- Create new Test User on my mac

- Removing files from library

FINALLY INSTALLED. WHAT I DID?

Just download Mac Os via LAN cable. After download, MacOS Mojave pop up will appear.

Close it

Restart

Go to Application and install it.

Now it works.

Thats the shame Apple Inc. and Apple Guys.

For me worked:

-Remove all old downloaded update-installations from finder

-restart the MBP

-connect via lan to the internet, not WiFi! (with WiFi it fails all the time)

-download the same update again

-quit the automatically starting installation process

- restart the MBP

- open finder and instal the update.

I have no idea, why it worked and it was not my solution, I found that work around here.

But for my MBP 2018 13” it worked at the first try!

The recovery mode suggestion didn’t work for me. I wasn’t even given an option to upgrade to the latest MacOS despite following the instructions and holding Option-Command-R.

I give up. I don’t want to experiment anymore and I shouldn’t really have to.

The irony is that Apple’s latest computers don’t seem to be fully compatible with its latest OS!

Very disappointing ... what a waste of time too!

hello.

I did all solutions proposed on the different replies.

the solution that worked was this one:

delete wifi downloaded Mojave installer.

download it again on ethernet connection.

once downloaded, installer starts automatically, so I keep connected my Macbook pro 2018 on ethernet, basically to not touch anything during the installation, and it worked on the first try.

I think that was the reason to success. installer must download some data during installation, and somehow, it doesn't work on wifi. this is only a supposition of myself, of course, trying to explain this fenomena .

so KEEP THE MACBOO CONNECTED ON ETHERNET DURING THE INSTALATION.

I tried everything myself the recovery mode, SMC & everything in between. But then I went to change the proxy’ Setting , restart then re install mojave & voilà it worked.

FYI I have MacBook Pro 15” 2018

System preferences > Nework> Advanced> proxies . Then make sure you are NOT selecting “Auto

Proxy Discovery” Or “Automatic Proxy Configuration”

Then click “Ok”> “ Apply”

Lastly restart and try updating again.

Good luck

Same issue for me.

Macbook Pro 2018 model. Mojave does not appear in 'Updates' in the Mac App store. When I download it manually using the banner on the 'Featured' tab, it downloads fine.

Try to install it, it fails after a couple of minutes and just throws the message "An error occurred installing Mac OS".

I have tried resetting SMC, deleted the download and done a clean install and checked the drive for inconsistencies using disk utility.

This is an issue from Apple's side and needs acknowledgement and resolution.

Thanks Sufi for mentioning the "install.log". I too was having trouble installing Mohave on my MacBook Air. I'd forgotten about the install.log and went to check it expecting something complicated. Turns out the WiFi had disconnected on me (I hadn't noticed it and didn't have the option to go with an ethernet connection). Simply restoring the WiFi connection allowed the download to proceed and the rest of the install went smoothly.
