Continuity camera doesn't work - time out error

I update my macbook pro 2015 to Mojave last night and did the same with my iPhone 7 last week (to iOS 12).

I was really excited about the camera continuity options but somehow it just won't work.

The problem occurs everywhere (in finder, in notes, in mail, etc). When I right-click and select import from iPhone and select take photo I get the message (after a few seconds) "cannot import from iPhone a time out of the device occurred".

Handoff etc is working fine (both ways from MacOS to iOS and reverse). Handoff, bluetooth is enabled etc. and devices are on the same network (Routed ATC latest gen)

How do I get it working properly?

I had the same problem, it not only requires you to have bluetooth and wifi on, but i had to go to my bluetooth setting on my computer and select to my phone to connect to via bluetooth. After i paired the iPhone with the computer it works as advertised.

Here's the solution. Given that you satisfy all conditions in this support doc: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support, then all you have to do is go to your Mac's Bluetooth preferences, and connect the iPhone from the scanned list. You can also do it from your iPhone. Go to Settings -> Bluetooth, connect the Mac from the scanned list. This step about connecting directly between the 2 devices via bluetooth is not mentioned at all in the doc and after doing that, all features of Continuity works. No need to sign out/ sign in iCloud.

Worked for me. Although I had Bluetooth turned on on both devices, I didn't realize that they weren't connected. I went to Settings on my iPad>Bluetooth. Saw my MacBook listed under "My Devices." Tapped on it. A message popped up on my MacBook screen telling me the iPad wanted to connect. I clicked on connect, and that's all there was to it. Continuity camera is now working.

This really a very silly implementation!!!!!!

I had this error . I can make it work only by disconnecting my ethernet cable and linking my Mac and Ipad to the very poor WiFi router signal in my office.

I have ethernet because the office is wired that way and is far better than the building's overloaded router.

This is potentially a very useful feature Apple, which our business could use heavily.

Sadly, we can only use it if we physically disconnect machine and loose reliable connection to our office server.

Major fail Apple!!!!

* MacBook Pro 2016 with OS 10.14.1

* iPhone XS Max with OS 12.1

* Both devices have bluetooth enabled, are using the same AppleID, no VPN is enabled and are using the same WiFi network.

* The iOS device is unlocked when starting the process on the MacBook.

Attempted the following:

* Deletion of bluetooth settings on Mac OS

* Disabling and reenabling bluetooth on both devices

* Pairing iOS device with MacBook via Bluetooth

* Simple shutdown / restart of both devices

* Reset of PRAM and SMC on Mac OS

* Hard reset of iOS device

* Reset of Network settings on the iOS device

NB. AirDrop works between the devices, as does sharing of Bluetooth network etc.

In all scenarios above, the same "Device timed out error" is returned when attempting to 'Take photo' or 'Scan Documents'.

So, nothing's worked for me so far...
