I have had the problem for a month and went back to my old X. People keep posting to turn off LTE and someone marked it as an answer. Disabling functionality is not a solution to the problem and at best is a sort-of work around although it still doesn't eliminate all dropped calls. After Apple loaded some logging profiles and collecting data, what they confirmed is that I dropped many calls, as much as 15 times in a half hour. Hardware tests looked like all worked fine. Dropped calls were particularly bad if I was driving around an it appeared the phone could not make the handoff to the new tower. Apple agreed to replace the phone last night, on them, and not using my Apple Care. I drove around tonight and made a call from my new phone to an old 6S Plus. Went all over the city with the phones connected for more than 2 hours without dropping a call. It appears the phone swap resolved the dropped call issue. I saw someone else say they swapped the phone and walked out of Apple and had the new phone drop calls. I suspect either a bad batch of the new Intel cellular modems or maybe just poor quality control whereby bad chips get out sporadically and are not limited to a particular batch. Maybe something in the rest of the phone and not the modem however until Apple takes some of the bad phones and stress tests them to figure a root cause, we may never know and they may not want to publicize it. Ask Apple for a new phone. I responded back to the Apple tech tonight to let him know of my results. They need to end the pain quickly for customers that have spent a small fortune on a new phone.

I have the same problem on Xs. Calls may drop after 20 seconds or a couple of minutes. It is usually pretty quick to occur and I have had it drop 5 or 6 times in a row in less than 60 seonds into the call and gave up up and resorted to email. Have tried the recommendations, reboot, turn LTE to data only, etc. Tonight, I went to AT&T and got a new SIM just to see if it would help. Received a call, dropped after a minute. Returned call, dropped after a minute. Called again and call lasted 3 minutes and hung up. These times are from the call log. What a catastrophe - my iPhone Xs is useless. - $1,675 with extended warranty and taxes. This weekend, I am going to borrow a friend's SIM on another carrier and see if it works any different from AT&T. Then I am going to go buy a Samsung S9 and put my AT&T SIM in and see how that works out. I am dropping calls with 3 or 4 bars of AT&T service for no apparent reason. Cannot keep going with a phone that doesn't work.

I am with Telstra as well in Sydney. They swapped my XS max with a new one and still having the same issue... They guy from the customer service was great but I’m disappointed with apple that can’t make a proper launch for the iphones.. Anyway. Hope a fix is coming very soon cause I can’t stay with this phone if the call keeps dropping.

I would love to know if this issue with the new iphone sx and sx max gets fixed. I have been holding off getting one and watching everyone with problems. Also was wondering if the phone dropping out would happen in Australia too. I see it is. I know the recent update 12.0.1 claimed to fix the wifi signal and problems with connecting to the internet. I am going to keep holding off. Thanks for posting re- Australia.

Absolutely what happens with my XS Max as well, but I’d take it one step further for me. Along with all the call issues which are present, whenever I seem to leave a WiFi network and go onto LTE data usage, my phone will not load anything data related without a hard reset of my phone despite having cell reception bars and LTE indications. This means when I’m at home on my WiFi, I have to perform a hard reset of my phone when I leave in order to be able to use my data. It’s the weirdest thing.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is posted on several sites and was already tried. It isn't a fix and at best is a partial workaround by disabling what should work, however, even completely disabling LTE only improves calls somewhat. It still doesn't completely resolve the issues with calls or come near the performance of the iPhone X running LTE which is what I went back to until the issue is really fixed. Many may not have the ability to go back to an older phone, especially if they traded up. I have disabled many things on the phone without completely resolving phone calls. Apple has loaded a couple of profiles on my new phone to collect data. I hope they will find a resolution soon.

I am in Australia, and have bought the new XS Max. My calls are dropping out continually. ‘Call failed’ comes up in the screen. I had an IPhone 6 for years and was with the same provider (Telstra) and never had this problem.

I am incredibly disappointed with the fact that the most basic function of a phone- isnt working.

I have tried so many suggestions on the net, called up Apple (1 hr 15 mins that call) - unresolved.

If I am able to get a refund, what Apple phone should I get?!

I have been watching the new iphone XS and XS max for weeks now, as I was going to get one. It seams that everyone is having problems with their phone dropping out during phone calls. I am going to say it isn't the carrier. I was going to go through optus. I am still not sure if it is a hardwear problem or a software problem. I am really still hanging out for the issue to be fixed, as I really want one.

I really have no idea. I guess if enough people are complaining, or if it can become a news worthy story. Can you see on your new iphone the new antenna - it should have little lines on the outside rim of the phone. This is where people are saying the problem is coming from. If those are covered...the call drops out. Maybe certian phone covers create this problem? I Travel Australia, and need a relyable phone. I know optus isn't always the best bet, but my partner has telstra so we cover both bases. I was really looking forward to this new iphone. especially the camera.
