'Word has insufficient memory. Do you want to save Word Work File ***.tmp as'

I am using a MacBook Air bought new in 2015 with Mac OS Sierra 10.13.6 and Microsoft Office 2016 15.19.1.

Roughly once a week, when I try to close a document (that I have been saving regularly throughout the few hours I have had that document open), I receive an error message saying 'Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges ([name of document]). When I click OK, I receive a new error message saying 'Word has insufficient memory. Do you want to save Word Work File ***.tmp as'. Regardless if I click 'Yes' or 'No', the document does not save the changes I have made (the changes that I had previously successfully saved are gone too) and I am unable to find this document under the new name it has given the .tmp document on my computer. Sometimes I am able to access the changes that I had saved earlier by going to iCloud.com and downloading them from my iCloud Drive.

Would love any help as I am losing a lot of work as a result of this problem! I've run a check for viruses and there are none. Since the problem starting occurring a couple of months ago, I have been fully restarting my computer every few days. My hard drive and iCloud both have ample free storage left. I am not sure if this is relevant but my Documents folder (where the documents in question are saved) appears to be located in my iCloud Drive and I am not sure if they are also stored on the hard drive, but I access them via Finder.

Thanks!

MacBook Air (11-Inch, Early 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

I ran the First Aid check and no issues arose.

Not sure if this is relevant, but I also just remembered that a few weeks ago, I had this same issue when closing documents, except every time I clicked on a saved Word document to open, it would open a random other Word document from my computer (except it showed the correct document in the thumbnail). I could click on the same document 4 times in a row, and it would open 4 different documents, and none of them were the one it was meant to be. It seemed to have fixed itself the next day and I haven't had this issue since.

I showed it to the IT Help staff at uni and he was very perplexed by the problem but he couldn't fix it because he didn't know much at Macs.

This was his report:

Report:

Opening certain documents from Recent opened entirely different documents.
Mac needs an update to x.x.6 from x.x.5 High Sierra. Advised to do this.
Slowness seemed to originate from access files from iCloud, whether it was downloading cached files and not updating correctly, indexing is corrupted, unsure what.
Seemed to correct itself.
Network settings all correct.
No suspicious logon items.
Installed Malwarebytes to check for virus/malware - all clean.
Plenty of space on HDD.
Autosave is set for every 10 minutes. Word seems to hang roughly every 10 minutes.
Excel and Powerpoint work fine so don't see a point in reinstalling Office.
Issue seems to be with the connection to the iCloud service.
Only idea is to move the Documents folder off the iCloud and onto the laptop.
As this could cause other issues or might not resolve the problem, advised to take it to a Mac store.

Try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. You can run the report for free at least once, but if you run it several times, at some point it will ask you to pay a license fee.

Etrecheck – System Information

Sep 26, 2018 4:23 PM in response to alexsmith270

Your EtreCheck reports 28GB free space not 55GB but that number will fluctuate as applications and the OS create and delete cache files. Word creates lots of temp files as you work. I owned a 4GB 2011 MBA and ran Word and Adobe products without problem so RAM alone probably isn’t the issue. I don’t see any baddies in your EtreCheck report. Let’s see if Eric catches something I missed.

In the meantime why not restart in Recovery and run Disk Utility first aid to see what it says. Also, if you aren’t backing up regularly consider doing that. And as you use the computer keep an eye on the free drive space. I’m curious to see how low it goes over the course of several days use without a reboot.

I haven't run into this particular issue... but... If you have enabled documents in the cloud, and are saving them in your documents folder (or desktop) synced to iCloud, I suspect Word is choking on something when the document is actively being synced while attempting to save from Word.

Try storing the documents in a folder that is not synced to iCloud. See if the issue persists.

Office 2016 is optimized for use with Microsoft's OneDrive service. OneDrive handles live syncing differently.

Whether documents are stored in iCloud or not, they are always on your computer's hard drive. I doubt iCloud is part of the problem. A couple questions: How much RAM does your computer have and how much free space does the drive have? To find out how much RAM you have, click on the Apple menu and select About this Mac. You'll find a listing for memory. To find how out much free drive space you have, select your hard drive icon and use Command I to get information. Look for Available - that's free space.

Could be. Office is RAM hungry but Once again, I used a similar machine and often had Word, Photoshop, InDesign, and FileMaker Pro, not to mention a browser. As the computer uses RAM and we ‘overload’ It virtual memory takes over, the hard drive gets used as temporary RAM. That’s why I’m focusing on the hard drive.

I often have several Word and PPT documents open at once (probably 4-8 of them), could this be the issue? Also, I'm happy to get rid of any Adobe stuff on my computer but I don't know how (I installed a free trial of Adobe Photoshop Suite once and I thought I got rid of most of the files but apparently not, and I think I installed Adobe Reader last week for temporary usage).

I'll restart Recovery and run Disk Utility first aid now. I restarted the computer two days ago and this is what it says at the moment:
User uploaded file

I do check the storage from time to time and I haven't seen significant fluctuations.
