tried to install mac cleaner but didn't work

I opened Chrome and got a notification that I had three viruses and needed to download Mac Cleaner or would suffer permanent damage to my Mac in several minutes. The site looked official so I downloaded the package offered. Right before I downloaded there was also a load beeping. After downloading it, I tried several times to install it, but the install process always failed at the end. In the process I had to give my apple ID password.

I realized immediately after that it might have been a scam, and I moved the download to trash and emptied the trash. I also changed my apple password. Is my mac still at risk? Or could the original notification have been legit?

(I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro with OS X Yosemite (version 10.10.5) and a 2.7 GHz Processor.)

A Web site cannot examine your computer and determine that it has malware. It was a scam apparently aimed at getting your Apple ID and password. You say you've changed your Apple password - I hope that means you changed your Apple ID password - the one you use to log into Apple. Also change your computer's password. Many people re-use passwords so if you use that same password for other accounts change those account passwords too. Finally, if I were you I'd download MalwareBytes software - it is a legitimate anti-malware program. It will scan your computer for malware and delete any it finds. You can use it at no cost in its manual mode - you decide when to run it - or you can pay for constant protection.
