Voice navigation prompts in iOS 12 Apple Maps.

I’ve noticed with the Apple Maps release in iOS 12 a change in how vocal promots are given during navigation if the iPhone is being used to play music. In previous releases, the vocal prompts would lower the volume of the music and then speak the direction (IE: “turn left into 125th ST”).

With the iOS 12 release it only dings to denote a left turn versus a right turn, and only provides vocal feedback and prompts if music isn’t being played.

Is there a way to disable this feature? If not, perhaps the option should be added to a future iOS update as, at least for me personally, Apple Maps is unusable for navigation in its current state. I’ve always preferred using Apple Maps to Google, but can’t with this new feature.

Hi there, The Hoff!

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities. If I understand your post, you don't get the audible turn-by-turn directions as expected in Maps since updating to iOS 12. Specifically, when also listening to music from the iPhone, you just hear a ding/chime to indicate which direction to turn. I use Maps myself, so I know how valuable the verbal cues are. I'm happy to help!

From what you've described, it sounds like the audio settings for Maps has the Guidance Voice volume set to "No Voice", which silences the verbal navigation cues when media is playing on the iPhone. There are four Guidance Voice volume options, and you can set your desired volume by starting your route, then tapping the tab at the bottom where your estimated arrival times and distance are shown (be careful not to tap the End button, as this will end your trip). A menu pops up with several options, "Audio" appears in the lower right. Tap this, then choose from "Low Volume", "Normal Volume", and "Loud Volume". A description of what each volume does will pop up below the volume options so you can choose one that best matches your preferences.

Have a lovely day!

I have the same problem. I don’t get voice prompts when music is playing via Bluetooth unless it is playing through Apple’s own music app. Prime Music just gets the dings that are useless.

Carplay isnt affected and works fine with voice prompts while Prime music is playing. It only seems to be a problem when playing as a generic Bluetooth device.

Using Google maps seems to be the unfortunate solution for the time being.

Hi Carlos,

I have noticed the same issue after updating to iOS 12. I have checked this setting multiple times. It is set to normal voice. I wonder if it matters that I use Amazon music as opposed to Apple Music? It seems to be treating Amazon Music the same way it would a voice call.

Voice prompts work fine when I don’t have Amazon Music open or music is paused.

I’m not sure if it’s related, but I am also now having problems with maps allowing the screen to go to sleep (black) while driving. This screen behavior doesn’t happen all the time though... I believe it may only be when I’ve initiated directions thru Siri while the phone is locked?

Thanks
