text replacement ios 12

I’m on an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.1 and I can see all my text replacements just fine in Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement, but I can’t get any of them to actually work. I tried the turning off the Auto-Correct etc and rebooting from that screen, no joy.

Any suggestions? Screen capture below. Thanks, folks.

EVERYONE ABOVE : The update made the character limit shorter for Text replacement. The limit is now 128 characters. This explains why some may work while others do not. I hope this helps. I found out from another post.

I don't want to use text replacement but can find nowhere to turn it off. In fact I can't find any reference to it at all. Certainly not in GENERAL/keyboard. years ago I created a text replacement that turned xo into xxxxoooo. Years ago I deleted it. Now it's come back and I can't find it, let alone delete it.

Text Replacement is in Settings>General>Keyboards>Text Replacement. You can check there for any replacements that you have. There is no switch to turn it off, but you can add/delete from there.

What I’ve noticed about the same issue: My older text replacements work as long as they weren’t opened after the update. The new replacements will not work at all, even though they are shown as saved. I hope to find a fix soon.

I am also experiencing This same problem. I can see my text replacement entries. The ones that I do not alter or change continue to work. And if I delete part of a replacement, it still works. But if I make significant changes or delete them and try to re-create them, they don’t work. This Is true for my iPad, my iPhone X,

That was the problem, because many if not all of my text replacements were more than 145 characters, they did not work. This is a huge bummer for me as I use text replacements similar to a business card with all my contact info. I really hope Apple changes this back. This was really short-sighted on their part.

I was so frustrated & got onto few forums: after doing few suggestions and at the end I’ve deleted all my text replacements (35), restarted my device. Waited for 1min. Pasted from my notes few of my old phrases-txt replacements ( great advise to have them in notes), and still didn’t work! Grrr

Called Apple support....just to find out that they’ve reduced to 128 characters for text replacement. Can you believe that???

Hope Apple developers will fix this frustration.

It seems that apple has limited the length of text replacements so anything longer than the limit doesn't work. It seems for many of us it's a problem. Can we ask apple to reverse that change in the next update? I am not sure what was the benefit if limiting the text replacement feature, but I hope it can be reversed.

I’m tempting after this, to go with Samsung. And that is after starting with iPhone 1.

Why has Iphone limited text replacements to 128 characters. . I depend on text replacements for stock replies. I can still see my text replacements but those over 128 characters just don’t work , So I have to copy and paste those exceeding 128 characters into my emails.

This is a game changer for me . I think I’ll change to an Android phone and use Fire Keys or something similar. Does anyone know of a comparable Android version to the old iphone text replacement.

Clarification: it’s 128 characters in TOTAL for all text replacements. The support confirmed the 128 character limit and said it was unintentional and would (probably) be fixed in a coming update. 🏼♂

Not sure if this an intended feature downgrade, or it's some dev touched a magic parameter, the supported text length is shortened a lot.

Extremely annoying! This is a regression, which should be picked up by apple auto regression cases.

Only if Apple would have described about text replacement in the description of their 12.1 update..... I’d never updated it!!!

This is pathetic from Apple & needs to be fixed Urgently!!! They’ll loose a lot of loyal customers.
