Try the appropriate version of MathType in Pages 7.3, Numbers v5.3 , and Keynote 8.3 — all released in the last week which should have compatibility fixes in for MathType. You will need High Sierra or later installed to obtain these applications.

Viking gave some advice that's always a good idea -- contact the vendor (that's me/us) for support. In this case you didn't know if it was Pages causing the issue, or Mojave, or MathType. Thus, this was a logical first place to ask.

The short of it is that the combination of Mojave and Pages 7.2 doesn't work with MathType. There's nothing we can do about that except by way of permanent workaround (meaning that you have to do something once, and the fix is as permanent as Apple's future updates allow it to be). I'll spare all the why & wherefore, but do this to get it working...

  1. Download an earlier version of Pages. I tried it with 5.2.2, but I imagine anything from 5.0 through 7.1 will work. Trouble with this step is finding some place to download it from. Apple doesn't make earlier versions available, and 3rd party sites are quite often shady, and most of the others merely link to the App Store. So you're stuck. Time Machine is an option, but not everyone (myself included) uses TM.
  2. You don't need to install this version of Pages. If you do, or if the download doesn't give you any other option, that's OK. You can always get 7.2 from the App Store again once these steps are complete. All you need is Pages.app. I recommend putting it anywhere other than Applications; I put it on the Desktop when I worked through these steps.
  3. Run the older version of Pages and change the Preferences to insert equations from MathType. If the version of Pages is 6.0 or earlier, this option won't be in Preferences.
  4. Insert a MathType equation (not by copy & paste; you have to go through Pages' Insert menu). You'll get a pop-up telling you that "Pages wants access to control MathType". You must click OK.
  5. After you do that, MathType will open. Type anything inside MathType and close the window to insert the expression/equation into Pages. When you do that, you'll get a similar dialog telling you that "MathType wants access to control Pages". Grant the access by clicking OK.
  6. You can now close Pages, and delete the old version. Pages 7.2 will now work with MathType.

You'll need to make similar changes to let Keynote 8.2 and Numbers 5.2 work with MathType.

Of course we're supporting the product. That's exactly why I posted my earlier response. The fact is though, it's not our bug; it's Apple's, and they've already fixed it. They're just waiting for the QA process to play out before they can release the update. For now, the instructions I gave earlier work. We'd be happy to provide you with 1-on-1 support at support@wiris.com if something's still not right. Until the Pages update is released, there's nothing we can do except provide the workaround instructions.

Was hoping you would drop by…

Should one infer you downloaded Pages v5.2.2 from Mavericks and got it to work on Mojave? I would be very surprised at that.

Also, Mojave has killed Pages 09 v4.3. Application will launch but not open existing, or create new documents. Toast.

As this is a Pages and Mojave issue, I am going to request the hosts move this over to the Pages community.

I do not understand these instructions. Is Wiris going to support their product or not? It is a subscription service. If an update is needed to make the product compatible with current Mac products then Wiris should provide it, not expect customers to do a workaround. Do you have a subscription service for MathType for Mac or not?

Bob,

I cannot find an older version of pages to download and don't use Time Machine. Does this mean I am SOL? I really need to be able to use MathType in pages, I am a math teacher and almost all my material (quizzes, tests, etc) I've created using mathtype. I cannot edit any of these right now, which is creating a ton of extra work. This is extremely frustrating, and do I realize it's not mathtype's fault.

Hello Bob,

Would you please being i bit more specific in the steps 4. till 6. Several times you use Pages in these steps but i very much want to know which Pages you mean, the older version of Pages or the new Pages7.2? Also can you inform us which versions of the two Pages are open in which step?

Hopefully there will be soon a Pages-update which wil fix this. Each time Apple update there OS or Pages i am a bit worried if MT will still function correctly, don't you have a regular contact with Apple to ensure that MT will work properly with the next OS? Many math teachers are depending on MT
