mathtype not working properly on pages after mojave update.

Try the appropriate version of MathType in Pages 7.3, Numbers v5.3 , and Keynote 8.3 — all released in the last week which should have compatibility fixes in for MathType. You will need High Sierra or later installed to obtain these applications.

You're correct -- I pulled Pages 5.2.2 from another one of my Mac HD partitions, and it worked on Mojave. I didn't install it; I just used Pages.app.
I had this problem; I suspect that the first time the dialog asking me to allow Pages to control MathType appeared I answered no. Anyway, I went to System Preferences/Security & Privacy and chose the Privacy Tab. Then in the left-hand pane I selected Automation. In the right hand pane there was a box to allow Pages to control MathType that was unchecked, so I checked it. (There wasn't a similar button under MathType to allow it to control Pages.) When I then opened Pages and selected insert equation, MathType opened as expected. When I closed the equation, I got a dialog asking whether to allow MathType to control Pages. I allowed it, and now things work as expected. I went back to the System Preferences control panel and now there is a checked box for Pages under MathType and a checked box for MathType under Pages.
