Cover flow missing - Mojave Gallery is no replacement?

Why would Apple replace Cover flow with gallery? They are different

1st - Cover flow was a fast and informative method of scrolling thru visual files quickly as images, while also viewing a list of data below. I could see any data I wanted, dates, sizes, and critical COMMENTS that I make with all my files. As I work I NEED to see that data when scrolling thru images!

2nd - I Prefer the vertical nature of Cover flow because I could open multiple narrow windows, and nest them beside one another. I cannot open multiple windows of Gallery and do the same, inefficient use of screen space and lack of data.

3rd - And worst - Gallery does NOT support mouse scrolling??? due to the horizontal nature of the gallery file list.

Horrible design

PLEASE BRING BACK COVERFLOW !! Add it in addition to Gallery for those of us who depend on it for our work

macOS Mojave (10.14), coverflow gallery

Other than Path Finder, you can still download Finder from El Capitan and use that (I can send you a link if you need it). File Cabinet Pro has a Cover Flow View. https://apptyrant.com/file-cabinet-pro-help/ and so does Panic's Transmit (also a full File Editor) https://panic.com/transmit/

I still really miss it built into Finder though! (the Capitan version doesn't work in Dark Mode)

why would the MacOS team drop one of the signature features of finder

The problem is that your 'signature feature' is somebody else's 'meh, I see no use for it'.

Apple build an ecosystem and populate it with mid-range good-enough-for-lite-use apps. So, Pages and Numbers are no match for Word and Excel, Photos is no match for Lightroom and so on.

If your requirements are more demanding than the Apple apps, then yes, Apple really does want you to rely on 3rd party software. That's exactly how the system is supposed to work. At this point the only Apple app I actually use regularly is Safari. Check out Pathfinder. It is very good and not just for Coverflow. It has a whole series of features that are more powerful than the Finder.

Thanks, dialabrain. I used to use Path Finder many, many years ago - many. But as the Apple Finder matured, I drifted away from Path Finder. I just downloaded the latest version and it works great.

It's just sad that I have to go out and buy something that Apple should still provide with the OS. But at least, I'm in a position where I can write it off, as a necessity for my work.

I should note that I discovered that the cover flow in Path Finder doesn't work nearly as smoothly, using keyboard input, as the Apple Cover Flow did. But I'm OK with using just the trackpad.

I still think Apple should bring back Cover Flow. It's just far too useful to be left out.

This was shocking to see cover flow gone. Like so many others here I am a graphic designer and photographer (which I thought Mac's catered to) and I rely on cover flow to quickly find files visually. Gallery mode seems like its good for basic users to make quick changes but is clunky for professionals to use. This just supports my theory that the developers in the tech companies don't ask the people using their gear and software what they like and don't like and use input from other developers or corporate middle management that don't use these features. Anyway, after reading some of these replies I downloaded Pathfinder and find it is a good replacement for Finder cover flow. I still hope that Apple will actually listen to their users and put cover flow back into the options for Finder.

I work with lots and lots of images daily and I've never used Cover Flow actually. I actually forgot it was even there. When I'm working with thousands of new images, sometimes 1000+ a day, I dump them in a folder and hit Command + 1 for icon view and drag the icon size slider to make them big enough then scroll up and down and left right looking for the ones I need.

Then I right click on the ones i need and give them a Tag or drag them to where they need to be. If you right click in the white space of the Finder window you can sort them in several useful ways. It's a bit like using QuickLook with tons of files but more interactive. If I need to see Info about a file I just hit Command + Option + i for a "live" Get Info window.

You need to turn on Icon Preview in the Finder if it's not already on. hit Command + J in the Finder and tick "Show Icon Preview"

I mainly work at video production houses around the country and most of the time I see editors and designers using Command + 1 (Icon View and make them larger with the slider then choose an Arrange By) and sometimes Quicklook to find things quickly.

At the studio I spend most time at we Tag everything obsessively so we can find them quickly. To each his own but I find Icon View way faster to find things even over Quicklook. Cover Flow to me is too "magnetic" and only shows a few assets at a time clearly since they tend to overlap.

Personally, over the years I've come to use use Icon View set to arrange by Date Added a lot actually, since clients seem to love to upload new assets to random folders all day long ("How about this one‽ USe THE RED in This Sweater.MP4.PNG_copy1.jpg", "What a nice tree!!1!!.JPG.GIF") without a care for organization or the cost of rights usage. ("No, we can't use a Rolling Stones song in this. Here's the Library music we can use...")

Absolutely infuriating. This seriously impacts my ability to do my job and has crippled my performance. I do MASSIVE data ETL's (extract, transform, load) and after each job, two .csv files are produced with "Successes" and "Errors" and having the cover flow allowed me to keep the list sorted by last modified date to group each "report" that was used with the outputted success and error files and then "preview" what the data was for, and what the errors were. Cover flow made very quick and easy to find what I needed. Now...I gotta either use gallery which, AWESOME it's in alphabetical order, thanks for making that completely unhelpful and useless, or the three column view which groups it alphabetically THEN by last modified, again completely unhelpful and useless. I'm now forced to open multiple files in Sublime Text or OpenOffice to find what I need to be able to effectively do my job.

Give us back cover flow; it's critical for not only my job, but many others that are in a similar job role/function. Look at the list of files I now have to either guess or OPEN unnecessarily until I find the file I need again.
