Font displays okay, but won't print properly

I'm trying to sort out some font problems, and one font I use a lot - Frutiger - is giving problems.

Frutiger displays properly on the screen, but when I try to print (on a Canon MP610) from certain applications it comes out in Helvetica (but all mis-kerned).

It prints properly from Pages '09, Graphic Converter, InDesign; it screws up when printing from Pages 7.2, TextEdit, and Nisus.

Confusingly, if I copy text from one app to another, the results vary. Text copied from InDesign into a TextEdit document prints properly; text copied from Pages '09 into Pages 7.2 doesn't.

If I print to a .pdf file, the file looks okay on the screen but when I print the .pdf it comes out exactly as it would if I'd printed directly from the application.

What's likely to be going on? Caching problem? Corrupted font? I've tried replacing the font from a backup and clearing whatever caches I know how to.
