Terrible frame rate / Stuttering on XSMax iTunes HD content

I’ve just tried watching Blade Runner HD and Twin Peaks Season 3 on the XS Max, and it’s almost unwatchable.

the frame flicker / jerkiness during panning or long motion shots is terrible.

Even close up dialogue scenes are almost stop-motion like!

I can’t for a second believe this is the way the latest “experience” is supposed to be. If it is, this unit‘s going back I’m afraid.

Does anyone one share this issue or have any ideas why this would be happening? Same content on my 7plus runs like warm honey!

Hi Banzaiuk,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities. From your post, it looks like you're running into performance issues when playing iTunes purchases.

Are these iTunes movies downloaded directly to your device, or are you streaming them? Depending, there are a few steps to try.

If you're streaming, you'll want to make sure you've tried both a Wi-Fi network and a cellular data connection to see if you notice a difference. You can switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data using your Control Center, detailed in the article titled Use and customize Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch .

If the issue persists on both network types, downloading directly to the iPhone and testing again would be a great next step.

On the other hand, if you've already downloaded the movies to the device, you might try to Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and then test again:

Restart your iPhone X or later

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either volume button until the slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.*
  3. After your device turns off, press and hold the Side button again until you see the Apple logo.

Re-downloading a movie and testing again may help narrow things down as well, using the steps in the article Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books from the App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books .

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Open the iTunes Store app.
  2. On your iPhone or iPod touch, tap User uploaded file More in the menu at the bottom of the screen, then tap User uploaded file Purchased. On an iPad, just tap User uploaded file Purchased.
  3. Depending on what you want to redownload, tap Music, Movies, or TV Shows. You might need to tap "Not on This [device]" to see all of your items.
  4. Find the movie, TV show, or music that you want to redownload, then tap it.
  5. Tap User uploaded file to the right of the title. The movie, TV show, or music downloads to your device. You can find movies and TV shows that you redownload in the TV app4 or Videos app, and music in the Music app. Don't see the item that you purchased?

I hope these steps help with your movie playback.

Take care.
