I’m intrested to know how often this happens.

I bought a new iPad mini 4 from Target sealed. Opened it immediately after I got home to find it was a fake. All plastic, unbalanced, plastic piece stuck in lightning charge port. All totally fake. Serial number printed on the fake did not match the serial number on the box.

Went back to Target within the hour, luckily, they remembered me. Hung out there for an hour or so while they started an “investigation“. Got another iPad that was real and I left. It’s been a couple months now and I haven't heard anything from anybody. No follow up questions. Nothing.

I would love to know where in the line this occurred. Manufacturing, packaging, shipping, stocking, sale. It’s hard for me to believe this is a one person job.

I also asked if it had been a return. They told me all apple product returns go straight to back to Apple.

I’d wager a bet somebody bought a fake on, realized it was junk. Then bought the real one. In order to get rid of the fake one, they put the fake one in the rearl one’s box and returned it, using the receipt from the real one they bought. Target never insoected the return. Target or the dishonest customer did the plastic sealing thing to make it appear it had never been opened.
