I had the same issue with both Brother DCP-6690CW and Samsung C480FW. Ran a network configuration and noticed that since updating to Mojave (when the print problems began) that the IPv6 had been disabled. Go into your printer settings and enable IPv6, turn printer off and restart and all should be OK again.

Try the following:

  1. Verify that you have the latest printer driver for your printer that supports macOS Mojave. You may need to download the driver directly from the manufacturer's support site.

  2. Perform a "factory default" reset on the printer.
  3. Reset the Mac's printing system.

  4. Enable the CUPS printer interface on the Mac.
  5. For network printers, verify if the printer requires the SMB protocol to share its printer queue over a network. If it does, be sure to configure it properly for your network. Note that some older printers do not support the later versions (v2 & v3) of the SMB protocol.

Hey rkstiens,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I can see that you're running into trouble when attempting to print on your Mac after upgrading to macOS Mojave. I'd like to offer some information to help get this working as it should. To start, do you run into the same issues when you attempt to print when your Mac is in safe mode?
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

This resource offers additional troubleshooting tips to help isolate the cause and potentially resolve this for you. You may want to try these in safe mode if you're unable to perform them when you boot normally. If you can't print from your Mac or iOS device

Let me know how this works for you.

Cheers.

I feel your pain. I did exactly the same thing myself: bought a new Brother printer to replace my HP printer.

On the positive side, I did come up with a possible solution which I posted to my Apple Bug Report46807004. It looks like problem is a permissions issue in the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) used by Apple. Editing this file appears to solve the problem, assuming the user has a basic knowledge of Unix.

/private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf

Add the line "Allow from All" in this part of the cups.conf file

<Location />

  Order allow,deny

  Allow from All

</Location>

Found a work-round thanks to Apple Support (btw, I was printing via my USB cable) - this is what I did for Epson XP-800:

  • connect printer via WiFi
  • remove the USB cable from back of Mac
  • remove printer from System Preferences>Printers & Faxes (use the little "-" symbol at bottom left hand side to remove)
  • when that screen is blank, right click in the empty screen to "reset printer settings"
  • add printer back in
  • printer will now print via Air Print (ie wirelessly)

The wonderful Apple support person did accept that it is largely an Apple problem but he also helped me to see that Epson have not updated their drivers for this model to work with Mojave.

For the time being (at least!), I will stick with Mojave and try to put pressure on Epson to get them to update to OS 10.14 (currently they only support up to OS 10.13).

Hello folks,

I also have an Epson ET-3750 and have the same problems since Mac OS Mojave installed on my faithful MBP.

Apparently, the troubles are coming from Preview.

I used all the many tricks mentionned above, none of them worked with Preview.

However, I noticed that if I open my files with an other app, **magic**, the dual-side printing appears back, the grayscale and drafts options also. I tested opening PDF's with Firefox, Chrome, Adobe Reader and I have the same options back.

So the blame is to put on Preview as far as I'm concerned.

Dear Apple, you were so happy to claim that your new products are more ecological than ever. So, can you investigate into that ?

Because not being allowed to print in dual side and grayscale (which is one way of getting ecological printing) does not seem coherent with your claims.

Thanks and good luck.

This is how I got my Epson ET-2650 printing again after installing Majave:

1. Go to Printers | Epson® Official Support | Epson US and search for your printer model

2. For the Operating System dropdown on that page, make sure macOS 10.14.x is selected

3. Under Downloads, scroll down to Drivers and at a minimum, download and install the Printer Driver. I installed the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package Installer, which includes the Scanner driver, Software & Firmware Updater, etc.

After installing this, I was able to print again. If for some reason this doesn't work for you, you might try using the Epson Uninstaller software on the same page to uninstall everything first. This does more than just remove the printer from Printers & Scanners in System Preferences; it actually removes all the current drivers. Then try installing the new drivers again.

Obviously this applies to Epson printers, but similar steps for other printers like Canon and HP might also work.

You are correct; it is difficult to roll back to an older system, but there are procedures on the Internet describing the steps. Using time machine is one of those and this has a lot of disadvantages.

The bug I ran into involved printing to printers that are on a different subnet from my Mac. Printing to these printers involves having the print job automatically "routed" for the connection. For example if my computer is on IP address 192.168.12.180 and the printer is on 192.168.11.205, they communicate through our network router. Mojave broke the ability for printing to work when the computer is on a different subnet from the printer. Part of this issue seems to result from the permissions issue I described in the CUPS configuration. Adding the single line to adjust this was not that difficult. And removing and then reinstalling my printers resolved the issue for me. I also had to use only the generic Postscript printer driver, rather than the branded one that did not work.

I agree that Macs should be easier than this, and hope Apple releases a real solution. Since this is a wide-spread serious issue for the desktop publishing industry, it is inevitable that it will get some attention. Sorry.

It looks like Apple has fixed the problem, at least for me. After updating to Mojave 10.14.2, as I posted earlier in this thread, my Brother HL-5250DN, purchased in 2006, no longer printed, and Brother support said they only provide drivers for the printer through Mac OS 10.10. I just updated to OS 10.14.3, deleted and re-added the printer, let it auto select the driver, and now it works!

One other possible workaround I got from Brother tech support (but did not try) is to connect the printer to a computer directly with USB, rather connected to the network via ethernet.

I encountered the same issue with 3 different brand printers used in my office. After spending a good deal of time with Apple support I am restoring my Mac back to High Sierra. There are no printer drivers that are compatible with Mojave and the drivers that worked with OS 10.13. There are some printers that have drivers for Mojave, but my HP, Brother and Dell printers are not those models.

I experienced the same issue after upgrading to Mojave. I have an HP 8720 that dropped off the grid. So frustrated, had to stop everything I was doing to figure out what the **** happened to my printer. Thanks Tesserax for providing so many possibilities. I skipped to #4 on your list, reset my printing system in Mac...reinstalled software for HP and all is good now.

I’ve tried everything that’s been suggested and the only thing that works is disconnecting my MacBook from the network, going to the printer and reconnecting so I’m on the same Wi-Fi pod and then I can print. I’ve changed the cups conf file (never thought I’d have to know what that is), uninstalled, reinstalled, reset printers, changed the sharing settings etc etc etc and nothing has worked. Am so angry with Apple, we’ve had nothing but Apple products since 2002 and it’s getting harder and harder to stay with them.
