Guided Access disable screen sleep

We have 9 ipads that we use on our production floor, we keep them in guided access because lets face it, we don't want them messing around instead of working. Mid last week, I took them down because we were doing inventory and I updated all of them to IOS 12, and when I came in yesterday morning, I noticed that the screens were turned off. Guided Access should not put the screens to sleep, but they are. Is there a way to prevent the screens from going to sleep?

I think I may have found the solution.

Go to settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access

Once there at the bottom there is a mirror display auto lock. Make sure that is on. I was struggling with this and just found this setting.

Hope this helps,

Nik

Wohoo is referring to using the Apple Configurator app, or the Device Enrollment Program, to enabled "Supervised" mode on the iMacs. His suggested step 2 & 3 is to use Meraki MDM (a paid MDM platform) to manage the devices and lock them into "Single app mode".

While this may work for some, Meraki is not cheap and "Single app mode" has limitations. Specifically, you can lock the device into only running Safari, but you can't pass any settings to Safari or even enable full-screen mode w/o address bar. In my case, the app I need to run is Safari but the only way to make it run full-screen is to use Guided Access.

If the app you need to run is a standalone app and not browser-based, Meraki *is* a viable solution.

So I'm also negatively impacted by this but I've got some potential good news...

Through my research, it looks like it *might* be fixed in version 12.1.1.

I'm pulling this information from this post I found:

https://docs.kioskproapp.com/article/899-ios-12-with-guided-access-causing-kiosk -pro-to-sleep

Specifically:

"In the latest developer beta of iOS 12.1.1, Apple has added a new setting under Guided Access called Mirror Display Auto-Lock. "When it is turned on, Guided Access will obey the Auto-Lock setting in Display & Brightness. When off, Guided Access will turn off the screen after 20 minutes of inactivity." In testing, this does appear to address the issue, allowing the screen to remain on indefinitely. "

Now the debate on whether or not to install the beta version vs. waiting begins...

Non-verbal child not able to communicate because of this!

My daughter uses an iPad to communicate. Someone accidentally installed this new iOS, she now looses her ability to talk. This is ridiculous. I have been trying to figure out how to work around this because she can’t push the home button to wake it up. If she doesn’t have something to say to keep the blinking thing awake (who always has something to say consistently timed like this?!?) then if one of us doesn’t realize she hasn’t expressed herself in x # of minutes, then she cannot access her ability to communicate!!!

Really Apple!?! Who thought this through. You know the volume of individuals with disabilities who use your devices. Release a fix!!!

Yes, the screen display works properly now with the setting above.

HOWEVER, the Wi-Fi still shuts off after 20 minutes. This is an issue when running a web page that refreshes with new data. Is there a setting to fix this? Wi-Fi stays on all the time if Guided Access is OFF. But 20 minutes after I turn ON Guided Access, Wi-Fi shuts off if no interaction with the device.

Did anyone run into this issue related to Guided Access?
