CarPlay Disconnecting - iPhone XS Max

Dear all wise and all knowing Apple Community 🙂

I recently switched from my iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.0 to an iPhone XS Max running iOS 12.0.

I have a 2018 Audi S4 with the latest firmware from Audi.

With the switch to the XS Max, seems that my Apple CarPlay will get into a cycle of disconnecting and reconnecting

every 30 seconds or so.

I tried reverting back to my 7+ and works fine.

1. Siri is enabled.

2. The USB Lockout is turned off on the XS Max. The 7+ had the lockout turned on

but made no difference in the XS Max toggling on or off.

3. Swapped the cables to the one in the box of the iPhone XS Max and USB ports

in the car. This had no impact on the XS Max recycling the connection. The 7+ is uneffected

business as usual.

Not sure if this is tied in with the authentication issue with the charger. I go over wired carplay and the 30

second increment is suspect as that is my lockout time on the phone.

Curious if others are facing this.

Thanks!

I solved the problem - at least for me. I have a 2018 A5 which was working just fine with my iPhone X but disconnects regularly with my xS Max.

Until - just the other day - I tried a genuine Apple lightning cable. And voila, problem is solved. I am suddenly having no issues at all, can run as many apps as I want. I even tried running Waze and Apple Maps at the same time and it was rock solid.

I have generally used high quality third-party cables (usually Anker) and have rarely had issues elsewhere. But all I can say is try the genuine Apple cable and see if it helps. It worked for me.

After spending 60 minutes troubleshooting with Apple Customer Service, I seemed to have solved the problem after suffering it for 4 months. The solution is as follows, and so far the problem hasn't come back (fingers crossed):

1- Delete or forget all phone devices from your car

2- Go to settings and delete or forget all cars from your phone Bluetooth and CarPlay connections

3- Go to settings, general, about, name and rename your phone. Just change whatever name you phone have on this field.

4- Re-pair your car and phone again

5- Enjoy, and hopefully it works for you as well it does for me.

6- You're welcome!

I thought my issues had been corrected by the 12.1.3 update and my XS Max was running carplay fine even on non Apple cables (however they are MFi certified).

Went on a long drive yesterday and it reset a couple of times.

However, I think reset is a mis-characterization of the issue.

It is related to notifications from Apple Maps.

I correlated the screen dropouts to the exact timing I received a "You are 14 mins from home" type notification from Apple Maps.

Therefore I may disable notifications from Apple Maps to see if that fixes the final issue.

However, this morning I see there is an available update to 12.1.4 so not sure what that now fixes.

Kind of 50/50 results for me since turning the WiFi Off.

Worked fine this morning, but not worked this afternoon.

This is the reply from my local Audi dealership

"The iPhone XS Max unfortunately is an unsupported device currently, so apple have not released the software to us for us to update our system, we are currently still on iPhone 7, with the been the case we cannot guarantee connective functions"

I also had the same issue with the problem being worse when apps were open. Prior to plugging the phone into the car, I close all the applications I have running. Sometimes it seems to help, other times not at all. Waze was the biggest problem, so much so that I had to delete it from the phone.

I have two USB ports in the armwrest with the Apple cable that came with the iPhone XS.

iOS 12.1.3 is working for me in my 2018 Audi A4 allroad. I no longer have the problem with connections to CarPlay with iPhone XS as we’ve all described in these many messages.

However, recurrence of an old problem from earlier versions of iOS has returned, namely that if I’m on a call and then activate CarPlay, the other person cannot hear me but I can hear the other person. This was corrected with an earlier iOS update, but it has returned.

Have not had this issue on my 2018 Audi S4 with my XS Max. I use CarPlay daily and all the time while I drive. My car was built in January 2018, and had the midyear change where one USB port is in the console and the other USB port is in the front next to the cigarette lighter. I am using the USB port closer to the front next to the cig lighter, with a 1 foot aftermarket Lightning cable.

Has everyone experiencing this issue using the USB ports in the center console only? Are there people with the USB port up front like I have that are experiencing it? Has anyone tried a shorter (i.e 1 foot) Lightning cable?
