macOS 10.14 Mojave on Mac Pro (Mid 2012) DVD not appearing in Finder

I have the same problem with an external optical drive with by new iMac. It's a bug in Mojave and all we can do is report it via the link provided by Eau Rouge and wait till it's fixed in the next update.

However, there is a workaround if you want to burn files to disk: Control (right) - click on the folder containing the files and select "Burn XXXX to Disc" from the contextual menu. You don't need to see the disk.

This happened to me after I "upgraded" to MacOSMojave 10.14. Thinking that this was a hardware problem with my OWC Mercury optical drive, I bought a new one. It won't work either. So it's a serious bug in 10.14. 10.14.1 doesn't fix this problem. I encourage everyone with this problem to file a bug report with Apple bug reporter:

Is it only blank DVDs that don't show up on the Desktop, do pre-recorded DVDs show up, I have a feeling that blank DVDs never showed up. If that is not the case then we may be looking at a corrupted preference file.

Click Go in the Finder menubar, click Go To Folder type ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist press Go.

A new Finder window will open with the file highlighted, move it to your Desktop. Restart your Mac a new finder.plist will be created, set up your Finder Preferences to show DVDs CDs on the Desktop. If you can now see DVDs on the Desktop you can delete the original file you moved to the Desktop.

Even though the blank disks don't show up on the Desktop are you still able to write to them using Toast.

If deleting the preference file and restarting does not work it may be a problem with the DVD writer, do you have another DVD writer you can use to compare.

Or as you have just upgraded to Mojave perhaps the DVD writer needs a firmware or software update in order to function in Mojave, it is a long shot but might be worth checking with the manufacturer.

Any version of Toast I have used had the ability to burn data DVDs and it is still the case in the latest Version 17.

Yes it would be better to find what the issue is with Finder, do the blank DVDs show up in the Sidebar of Finder windows. If they are not set to show in the Sidebar open Finder> Preferences> Sidebar and check CDs DVDs and iPods. If the disks show up on the Sidebar you may be able to Control-click on the icon and from the submenu select Burn.

Do you know anyone else who has Mojave, do they have problems seeing blank DVDs, it might also be an early bug in the system that might get sorted out in future updates.

I had this problem. Apple Support suggested I bring the drive to the local Genius Bar, where they gave it a clean bill of health. Back home my case was raised to level two support. Finally my tech showed me the workaround (see below in one of the replies). Basically, there’s no problem burning discs. The Mojave OS is confused. Apple engineers know about it and will soon issue an update to Mojave when they track this bug down and squash it. Took me three days, tearing hair and cursing. But it’s really no biggie and the workaround is easy.

Whilst in Finder click Finder on the menubar select Preferences, click on General and make sure Show CD's DVD's is checked.

How are you certain of this without an actual external DVD/CD to test it?
