Everything works in Apple CarPlay except navigation apps

I recently bought a new car (Mercedes Benz CLA 180) and tried using Apple CarPlay in it. Everything else works except navigation apps. When I use either Google maps or Apple maps, the current location gets constantly switched between the actual current location and somewhere in the middle of the sea near Thailand every now and then. Even apps like Find iPhone also shows the same incorrect location when maps are showing the wrong location. All apps works fine when not using CarPlay.

I tested with two iPhone X devices (mine and my wife's) with iOS 12 and I see the same issue on both.

Tested with an iPhone 6s running iOS 11 and still the GPS issue is there.

Tested with Google Maps on Android Auto on my brothers phone and it works correctly!

Has anyone ever seen anything similar?

I tried with iOS 13 and it seems the issue I have mentioned in the first post is fixed now.

However, GPS coordinates received are still slightly off from my actual location. Some apps like Waze seems to handle these errors but Google Maps sometimes goes haywire and starts rerouting.

[Iphone 8 V.12.2 / Alpine ILX-702D (Latest firmware)]

I face same issues here from Denmark.

Using Waze, Apple Maps or Google Maps is all the same.

The unit works for a period of time and then suddenly it starts to fade and gets more and more confused in interface.

I can then undock the cable and hook it on again which often gives me a period again where it works.

However is is working so bad that it is usefull as navigation and kinda frustrating when the navigation where the whole purpose of the new Alpine unit.

I have tried antenna from any given position inside and outside with no increase in quality.

I have an impression of that the unit cant keep the ongoing data pase or something like that.

This while it works 100% correct the first part of the trip though never more than 10-20 km. then suddenly it starts to fade 20-30 meters away from the driven road and in the end it kinda collapses and drifts all over the screen.

This is really frustrating.

Hope really a solution is close no matter who could be in charge for such a correction?

Since it fails in all apps then I kinda expsect that this is a unit problems leading to Alpine?

Thank you from Denmark

Hi joelfromberkeley, and thank you for your feedback.

1) Notice that my unit is a 702D, so maybe some slight differences there though I have not compared

2) I tried last evening with a new cable with no change in luck:-(

3) regarding I have my setup installed in a 2010 Ford S-Max.

I downloaded the app from IOS app store yesterday also named GPS diagnostic. It turned out that in car drinving it indicated all green signal when not docked. However, when I docked it to CarPlay the GPS signal lowered in intensity and even one of the signal colums turned red:-(

So as others has indicated then it seems that the quality of the signal gets worse when docked and that could be to blame?

No matter where I placed the antennna (Inside cabinet, front area of glass window or outside on top of roof) I got a poor result.

So something happens when docing and unit anteanne takes over.

There's a way to submit an issue in Waze with actual debug data:

I'll try it later on the week but if anyone here can try this and submit a ticket it might help our cause

Phone: iPhone 8 Plus

IOS: 12.3.2

Car: 2019 BMW 3 Series (G20) with iDrive 7

Infotainment version: See version menu item not available in my country =(

Problem: Wrong location in waze and other navigation apps after ~2 hours of use, location is always correct in the car's navigation.

Keep in mind that a lot goes into navigation location. The GPS antenna could be one possible problem. But then the head unit also uses speed and acceleration data to set position. It may also use it's own map data to help keep the position on a road when the GPS is less accurate. But all of this would happen in the head unit in the case of wireless carplay.

As well as wired CarPlay in most head ends.

Excellent news for BMW owners! In my country the ability of updating the system over the air is not enabled. My car was delivered with an old iDrive 7 version; I took it to the dealer, they updated iDive to the latest one and now it works flawlessly!

Old problem: In waze and google maps the app constantly thought I turned left or right at every intersection, even u turns; this caused the GSP to think I was going in the wrong direction and the route kept being recalculated.

Unfortunately iDrive is pretty restricted in my country so it won't tell me the system version; I don't know the previous version or the new version either.

So if you are un the US or Europe and GPS is crazy in your iDrive 7 it might be a different issue; if you are in a country where iDrive does not auto-update itself then you are in luck, just take the car to the dealer and ask them to update the software.

Best!

I am facing the same issue with my iPhone 10 maps (Apple & Google) when connected to car play. The GPS seems to loose track and freezes and map keeps turning upside down or horizontal. It is almost impossible to use maps in car play. This was working fine until I updated my iOS to version 12.

This is a severe usability issue which requires immediate Apple attention.

Same Apple and Google maps application works fine when not connected with car play.

I am having the same issue. As soon as I connect my iphone X to the car play the GPS start playing tricks. So I tried with Waze, Google Maps and Apple Maps they all loosing connection after I plug in the iphone to the carplay. Can apple just make sure that carplay always using phone GPS module but not try to use the car's head unit GPS. I guess that is the main problem when connected to the carplay apple apps trying to use cars integrated GPS module or something.... Please offer your customers some kind of a fix as soon as possible as this is very annoying!!!

If not connected, yes. I got accurate location on my iPhone X.

I forgot to mention that this is an intermittent issue. I typically get accurate location on the start of my trip. After a while, 15 minutes or so, on a straight freeway, the arrow (car location) suddenly jumps outside of the freeway. About 100 yards or so.

I doubt this is an antenna reception issue. It seemed to me that this is a communication between the phone and the head unit.

There is lag betwen the two.

Dec 20, 2018 9:31 AM in response to Dogcow-Moof

I did the reset of the head unit and relocated the antenna outside the car (above the windshield), problem is not resolved.

I'm still getting intermittency on the location accuracy. It seemed there is a time when the map or car location doesn't move i.e. "laggy" and when the app finally catches up it doesn't update the location.

That leads me to deduce it is iPhone X (IOS 12.1.2) and head unit (Alpine ILX-107) handshake issue.

I have the same problem with my Honda Accord. While I use google maps/Waze on car play it keeps changing my positioning to adjacent roads. Waze is better than google maps , it is able to hold my position better but not perfect. It creates lot of disturbance while driving as it keeps talking to provide directions almost always. I use iPhone SE 12.1.3 and my Honda has updated firmware.

Just to add some evidence that maybe it’s a CarPlay issue, my wife and I constantly have this issue with the factory headunit in our 2018 Hyundai Tucson. Our phone’s gps works fine when not connected to CarPlay, but when you do connect CarPlay it doesn’t take long before it places you in the middle of nowhere and is absolutely useless.

Our Hyundai’s headunit uses wired CarPlay, and doesn’t have it’s own in-built navigation.
