Relocate error "Sound Library files exist here"

I've just ran a clean install of Mojave.

I already had relocated my Logic X 10.4.2 sound library files in High Sierra to an external drive.

When I open Logic on the Mojave install and try to point Logic at the already relocated sound files (so I don't have to spend the next 3 hours downloading them all again) I can not select the drive. It is greyed out with "Sound Library files exist here" as the status. I know they exist there, which is why I want Logic to use that location.

Any thoughts on how to work around this?

Yes, it seems when you tell logic to move the files it's simply creating the symlinks for you. However, even though the files do appear in Logic they are then reported as uninstalled again.

I did find this post which was very helpful;

I used that info and copied those receipts files listed (plus a few more, just check the file names for stuff that looks relevant) from High Sierra/System/Library/Receipts to Mojave/System/Library/Receipts and most of the "Installed" flags came back in the Sound Library Manager.

I figured out a workaround for this—although it really is silly that there's no way to just point to the already-downloaded files in the sound library manager.

• The files will be on your external drive in a folder titled "Library," rename this to something else, quit/reopen Logic, and the drive will appear as an available location to install your sound library.

• Install the 1gb essential sound library—this creates the symlinks in your Library>Application Support folder.

• Replace the contents of the "Library" folder on your external drive with the previously downloaded files, quit and reopen Logic, and everything you'd downloaded before should appear as "Installed."

You might be able to just manually create the symlinks—one each to the "Garage Band" and "Logic" folders on your external drive.

I'd open the Sound Library Manager first and check the status of the libraries. Are they marked as "installed"? Can you load Library sampler instruments?

My guess is, given how haphazardly this function is implemented, your only option may be to spend the time downloading, installing and moving the library again.

The same actually happens when sound library is moved using symbolic links. Once files are moved, the Sound Library Manager instantly stops recognizing them as "installed", although Logic itself is capable of loading instruments and Apple Loops. And the only thing that fixes it is downloading the library again (which is installed to external by overwriting the files that have been moved!)

Thanks, you're right, it is a haphazard implementation.

Logic does state they are not installed, though they are, just on a separate drive.

I allowed Logic to download the "essential" sound files then tried the relocate function again. It still doesn't allow the move with files already there.

I'm concerned that if I delete all the sounds on the external drive then allow Logic to download them all again (which completely defeats the purpose!) then my High Sierra install will start kicking out the same error.

It is sort of a "feature" that doesn't work. From some of the posts I'm seeing in the forum there are apparently a bunch more in 10.4.2 that qualify as the same.

I may try the symlink trick and see if I can get it to work. I'll report back if I do.
