A grey box and a triangle within the box a wth an exclamation point shows up when i try to open a thumbnail to a large photo. Someone suggested using the apple and option (alt) keys simultaneously while opening photos. where is the "apple" on air?

I have a mid 2012 macbook air running elcappitan 10.11.6 A grey box and then a triangle within the box with an exclamation point opens when i try to open thumbnails of photos recently downloaded from my Olympus camera. Old photos will open without this problem.

The ! means that iPhoto cannot find the original file.

What version of iPhoto?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

iPhoto Version 1.5 (370.42.0)

It looks like you were using Photos for Mac and not iPhoto at all, and you are using iCloud Photo Library. iPhoto 1.5 is so old, it would not be running on a current Mac with iCloud Photo Library.

Which model is your Olympus camera? Is it on the list of supported cameras for el Capitan?

Terrance thanks, in addition: there are now 12,856 photos and 158 videos. I deleted 2,000 photos before leaving for my trip to Vancouver, BC. At the bottom of iPhotos it says it is uploading 13,836 items 22.4 MB of 8.49 GB. Also, all photos I had downloaded to the Library of iPhoto before going on the trip to Vancouver can be opened from thumbnail to large format. It is just the photos i tok in Seattle and Vancouver that i downloaded last week that cannot be opened. Hope this additional information helps.
