iPod Touch unable to connect to Mac due to invalid response

After I've updated my iTunes to 12.8, I am unable to connect my iPod Touch to my Mac and received the following message, 'iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch because an invalid response was received from the device.' How do I resolve this issue? My Mac is on the High Sierra version and my iPod touch is on 4.2 version.

Thank you.

iPod touch, iOS 4.2

FOUND A SOLUTION

Let iTunes tell you first that it doesn't recognize the device. After dismissing that message, follow the steps.

Start under the heading "How To Put An iPhone In DFU Mode"

Immediately mine when into Restore mode. I've now restored it using a backup on my local hard drive. Yes, back in business.

I have a 2nd gen Touch running iOS 4.2.1 and the latest Windows version of iTunes does recognise it.

Two points: although the 2nd gen Touch is "no longer supported" ( a vague and imprecise expression if ever I heard one), one would think it unlikely that Apple would stop an older device from using iTunes and (although I don't watch for this), usually both the Windows and Mac versions of iTunes are updated to the same number, at the same time, aren't they?

And yet it would appear that currently, the latest version for Mac is still at 12.8, while Windows is on 12.9.

Don't worry, this isn't a Mac vs Windows thing, what I'm suggesting is that taking my two points into account, perhaps the next update to the Mac version will address this issue.
