Yosemite, iOS 12 and iTunes 12 compatability

I keep my iMac on Yosemite 10.10.5 because i have lots of non-subscription software that won't run on later OSs e.g. Adobe Creative 5.5 Design Premium.

I have updated my iPhone iOS from time to time (now on 12) but upon connecting it by usb to my iMac for the first time in a while, it says I will need to update my iMac OS to 10.11.4 for it to work with iTunes.

I don't want to do this but would like access to my iTunes library and perform syncs and back ups.

System Inofrmation app shows that iTunes went to 12.7.1 on 2 Nov 2107, to 12.7.2 on 8 Dec 2017 and to 12.8 on 15 Jul 2018.

iOS 11 seems to have arrived in Sep 2017 and 12 in Sep this year although I'm not sure when I installed them.

Is it the iTunes (12.8.0 150) or the iOS that's preventing the connection? I see that unknown to me the last back up was in February this year.

Any help appreciated!

iOS 12 requires iTunes 12.8 or better running on OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan or better. A workaround for music is to use iTunes Match or Apple Music, and use iCloud for backup and data transfer.

Indeed! Anyway, I plugged my iPhone into my wife's iMac (which has access to my iTunes library through family sharing) and it is happily updating the iOS, is also allowing me to add albums from my iTunes library and is backing up and syncing.

Have yet to see where the back up is being stored - on mine or my wife's iMac. Very odd but solved the problem.

I will email Apple because, as you say, its somewhat rum to allow the upgrade and the not allow the USB connection.

Thanks again

So as iOS 11 is no longer signed I cannot go back to it and downgrading iTunes won't help on its own.

Hmmm...

My wife has 10.11 so I could try and back up on her iMac. I will also see if through family sharing I can access my iTunes library through her iMac and load up my iPhone that way. Curiously remote still functions with my library, I just can't create a usb link from my phone to my iMac for back ups and syncing.

I will mull over subscriptions, Adobe is way too expensive for a non-professional user as is Office (which I only use when sent files) but maybe I cloud live with Apple Music. Maybe I should start with iTunes Match to get as many tracks as possible upgraded and then think about Apple Music?
