Nikon software crashing

Hi I am desperate for some help,

I am a pro photographer and Use Nikons own software , View Nx-1 for sorting photos after a shoot, its excellent and very fast to use, i have tried lots of others and there's nothing out there that's as quick to use. however about 6 months ago it started crashing from time to time, the app would just quit, generate a crash report , restart and away to go again, it would go for 10 mins to 2 hours or anytime in between,

Recently it started crashing straight as i try to open it.

I have tied lots of things, reinstall, wipe - reinstall etc, been through Nikon's support network etc etc. but am stuck. i have tried in safe mode and it also crashes.

However- i setup a new user on my mac and hey presto the software runs so i assume it must be something to do with my login.

if i post a crash report would anyone here be able to point me in the right direction to fix it ?

To add, its a mid 2014 retina mbp , running mojave ( i hoped the new os might fix the crash situation but made no difference)

Thanks in advance

I took a quick look at the crash report that you posted.

Of significance is the Exception Type of: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT). This does not actually indicate a "crash," but the app aborting due to an exception. In this case it was attempting to pass a system routine and that routine is "saying" that it's faulty and can't continue. Thus aborting ("crashing") the app. These are sometimes symptomatic of attempting to get the n+1 object from an array with only n elements, i.e., poor coding.

Normally, I would suspect the app, but since you stated that it worked in a "clean" user account, there must be something in your current account that is trigging it.

The only things I can offer at this point are the following:

  1. Use the "clean" user account to run this app. Trying to figure out what in your current account is causing this will be difficult and, not worth the trouble in the long run.
  2. Perform a clean install of macOS and re-install your most critical apps, including this one.

Ok, great!

What we need to know first is the process & applicable subsystem that the Nikon program is using when it runs. We can get this information from the Activity Monitor and the Console apps.

With the app running, start the Activity Monitor and look for the app and note its Process Name.

With the app still running, open the Console app, and then, click on the Info button. Again, look for the Nikon app and note its name under the Process column. We will need this name for the Terminal commands. (Note: You may also find the process name by selecting a current log entry for that app ... if one exists.)

To look for any errors, related to this app, enter the following Terminal command in the Terminal app:

sudo log show --predicate '(messageType == error) and (subsystem == "this is where you would enter the process name")' --style syslog --info | cut -c 1-22,43-999 <return>

Please do provide the crash report.

Also, please consider running an EtreCheck reports as well to see if there is anything else we can find to help you.

(Note: The EtreCheck report does NOT contain any personal information.)

  • You can download EtreCheck fromhere.
  • Start EtreCheck from a normal user account. Optionally, you can run it from a user account with Administrator privileges.
  • Select a problem from the drop-down menu to enable the "Start EtreCheck" button. Optionally, you can add comments on what issues your Mac is experiencing, especially to aide others with similar Mac issues.
  • Click on Start EtreCheck
  • Allow the program to run to completion.
  • When done, select Report from the left-side window to display it.
  • Select the "Share Report" icon.

    Select Copy Report

  • Paste the report to your reply post.

It might be time to leave the Nikon software behind and look into other DAM (digital asset management) apps.

There are a number of professional apps that will do what the Nikon apps do. Some are Photo Mechanic, NeoFinder, Capture One Pro, Lightroom, OnOne Photo Raw, Mylio, DxO Photolab.

My favorite, Media Pro SE, will not be upgraded to 64 bit so is at a dead end with Mojave. I've used it for 15+ years and will be really sad to let it go when I move on from Mojave.

I looked at the OnOne Photo Raw and it's browser feature sounds a lot like what you do with the Nikon software. Look at the videos regarding the browser function at the developer's site; https://www.scottdavenportphoto.com/on1/. There's a demo version you can get also.

Another possible app is Lyn.

Hmm. I'm running Mojave on my 2014 Mac mini and just tried the command I last sent you. I don't have the Nikon app, so the result did not show up with any errors, but I didn't get the syntax error. I did try it with Time Machine and (as expected) I got a number of errors to show up. (Something for me to work on later. 😉)

Are you logged in with an Administrator-level user account? If so, you don't necessarily need to proceed the command with sudo. If not, and running from a normal user account, you will need to switch to an Administrator account for running the Terminal app.

Hi all and many thanks for the replies, I really appreciate you spending your time to try and help me ,

when I installed the software on my other profile I didn't test it for hours so its possible it may have crashed after some time as well but it at least started which it wasn't doing on my regular profile.

I spent all day yesterday doing a totally clean install and reinstalling apps , and only installed the critical ones, and only apps from Adobe etc

Its better than it was as at least the app starts up now but still crashing after a random amount of time , irrespective of processor load etc, it appears to run fine , when its running , its not laggy or shows any of the kind of things id expect to see if it was processor hungry, If I just leave the app open it doesn't crash, its only when its being used . Ive tried reducing the amount of files in a folder , made no difference, tried using it in different view modes ( not ideal but better than nothing) made no difference, clear the internal cache etc , makes no difference.

Ive also spoken to Nikon several times ( I have a special number for Pro support ) but they just say the same things- re-install, restart machine etc etc. which doesn't make any difference.

If I could find another app that worked as well, id swap in a heart beat as its so frustrating but I can't. I shoot motorsport and equestrian events, subsequently I end up with a several thousand images after a days shooting , the Nikon software allows me to view the images in full screen , hitting the arrow keys either way goes forward or back through the images, hitting a number key 0-9 assigns the number to the image, hitting shift allows 100% zoom at the cursor point. so I can very quickly sort them into categories , I've tried lots of others and none I have found have the functionality and simplicity , if I was using a big screen other apps wouldn't be so bad Lightroom for example , but while im on location it isn't an option .

I did have a little set of leds in the taskbar that show, memory usage , processor usage etc, different coloured at different loads, generally I rely on the fan noise to know if the Mac is under pressure, often they arant even on when it crashes so I don't think its that, I also reduced the files in a folder to 10 for example to test that theory a while ago, it still crashed , there's only one image displayed at one time that's full screen too , generally on past Macs its been graphics card size and ability that has helped with that situation. once I have edited all the images and I export them using Lightroom the processor and fans are all flat out for a few minutes
