Nikon software crashing

Hi I am desperate for some help,

I am a pro photographer and Use Nikons own software , View Nx-1 for sorting photos after a shoot, its excellent and very fast to use, i have tried lots of others and there's nothing out there that's as quick to use. however about 6 months ago it started crashing from time to time, the app would just quit, generate a crash report , restart and away to go again, it would go for 10 mins to 2 hours or anytime in between,

Recently it started crashing straight as i try to open it.

I have tied lots of things, reinstall, wipe - reinstall etc, been through Nikon's support network etc etc. but am stuck. i have tried in safe mode and it also crashes.

However- i setup a new user on my mac and hey presto the software runs so i assume it must be something to do with my login.

if i post a crash report would anyone here be able to point me in the right direction to fix it ?

To add, its a mid 2014 retina mbp , running mojave ( i hoped the new os might fix the crash situation but made no difference)

Thanks in advance

Ok, it's important to be sure that you are logged into a user account with Administrator privileges.

However, if you are logged in with a standard user account, we can get around that.

To do so, we first need to "elevate" your Terminal session to run with Administrator privileges. To do so, we would use the following command: su -l Administrator

Note that that's a small letter "l" and not a one. Also, the username here in this example for the Administrator account is: Administrator. If all goes well, you should see a prompt to enter the password for this account. Once that is entered successfully, you would get a new Terminal prompt, like: ComputerName:~ Administrator$

Now you can try the same sudo log show command as before.

Try completely exiting the Terminal app; then restart your Mac.

After it restarts, try the command again. You don't need to run the Nikon program as any errors would already be logged.

Let's also double-check the process name. Did you use Console or the Activity Monitor to get the name: ViewNX-i?

I suggest trying Console again. Select the Info button again, but this time before looking for the ViewNX-i process, right-click on the columns bar and select the Subsystem category. This should now display the subsystem for the process. Try substituting the subsystem name for the process name in the Terminal command.

Below is an example for the Microsoft OneNote app running on my Mac:

User uploaded file

You can see that OneNote has a process name of "Microsoft OneNote," but a Subsystem name of "com.apple.network" as that is the Subsystem process OneNote was using at that instant.

hi again,

I got the name from activity monitor and console ,

the subsystem name is com.apple.Appkit

so if I understand you correctly should I now be trying ...

log show --predicate '(messageType == error) and (subsystem == “ViewNX-i”)’ --style syslog --info | cut -c 1-22,43-999

or

log show --predicate '(messageType == error) and (com.apple.Appkit == “ViewNX-i”)’ --style syslog --info | cut -c 1-22,43-999

Are you using View-NXi as purely a first pass toss and sort tool?

If so, have you considered using Adobe Bridge?

Adobe Bridge CC is one of the few free items Adobe offers in their suite.

I personally use it as part of my workflow in conjunction with DxO Photo Lab

for RAW processing and Topaz Studio and Affinity Photo for touch up

and additional enhancements.

FWIW, I am surprised you have had such good luck with Nikon software

up until now. I have always found it slow and flakey at best.

yes, exactly that , its really easy to use, the 100% zoom at the cursor point is something I can't see on any of the others I've tried , so its fast to check if the image is properly sharp at that point , add a number or delete and move on to the next , the previous versions seemed more stable , but there was no choice but to upgrade to the NX-i a few OS updates ago, since then its got steadily worse, I use bridge when the view was completely not working its ok , but not quite as good , I also used capture NX to sort as it worked similarly to view
