To enlarge a thumbnail in every Mac program, you hit the spacebar. This was also true of iPhoto until the most recent update - Mojave / Version 4.0. It now is mapped to the return key. Is this intentional? Is there a fix? I have no interest in relearning what is a pretty well established convention.

Yes, the spacebar is no longer working to preview photos in Photos 4.0 on Mojave. The return key is working. You can also double-tap the trackpad to preview a photo or pinch to zoom.

Luckily, there is still a workaround for this problem in Photos:
1. Go into System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts.
2. Add the Photos app.
3. Add an entry for "Open Viewer" and use fn-space (function key & the space bar key) to add the space bar.
4. Then add an entry for "Close Viewer". Again, use fn-space to add the space bar.

That should take care of the problem for now.
