How to add table in Notes

I've been trying to add table or columns in Notes. I see the table icon in the tool bar but it won't do anything. In Format, table is listed but is in light type and won't work. Why is this? What do I need to do to get it to work. I want to add columns to a list I'm creating

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
