Video buffers when on airplay, but not on macbook

Anytime I switch a video that I am streaming on my MacBook Pro (2013), or my MacBook Air (2017), on to my TV using my AirPlay and my Apple TV, the video begins to struggle (constant buffering, choppy, etc). As soon as I turn the AirPlay off, and resume just streaming on my laptop, the video performs just fine (no buffering, choppiness, etc).

Any ideas how to resolve this? Since the video doesn't struggle when on just the laptop, it makes me think this is not a network issue. It also doesn't seem to be a computer quality issue because it's happening just the same from both laptops (both of which are in good to excellent condition).

Thanks for any help.

Yes, that would be a network issue.

When using basic airplay (to send just the video via playback controls, supported on certain videos within safari) it's having to stream the video to the computer and then send it over the network to Apple TV

If you're mirroring then that is sending your Mac's full display in realtime and really needs a stable connection.

If on wifi try Apple TV on ethernet

To see a current status of the network get a report from stumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks

For mirroring: make sure no other activity is occurring (other streaming, web use, network backups etc)

Test on another network
