Can not enter passcode after selecting voice over

iPhone 7 iOS 12.0.1

I turned on voice over in settings. After that, selecting a button did not initiate an action. I powered off my phone. When I powered the phone on, the keypad would not fill the passcode circles above the keypad. When I entered a number, the number was announced, but the number did not register.

I did the power down and power up cycle several times to no avail.

I am am not at home so I can not use my iMac to reset my iPhone 7.

I am in Athens, Greece and don’t think there are any Apple stores here.

With VoiceOver you need to use a tap-to-select and double-tap-to-type to enter the passcode e.g. if the first digit is 1 tap it to select it and then double-tap it to type it. And then use three-fingered scrolling to get into Settings and turn to off. Or if you have Siri enabled you could try using that to turn it off.

Thank you for your reply.

Using this method, I was able to get the phone to register passcode numbers indicated by the little circles above the keypad being filled. However, it said the passcode I entered is incorrect. I suspect the numbers being registered are not the numbers I tapped. I remember my passcode quite well.

After this attempt, this message appeared, "iPhone disabled try again in 15 minutes". Prior to that, it would say "iPhone disabled try again in 5 minutes".

I am concerned that it will be permanently locked with only a few more attempts.

After restarting the iPhone 7, you must enter the passcode before Siri can be used. When I try to use Siri, the phone displays a message above the keypad saying, "Enter Passcode to use Siri".

I don't want to reset or restore the iPhone 7 because I was on a trip and had taken 3 days of photos and made voice recordings. The phone was backed up before the trip, but I was not using iCloud for backup of photos or anything else. I use my iMac with an external drive for backup.

Had I known that with voice over, you have to tap to select and quickly tap twice to initiate an operation, I could have turned off voice over. I did not know that until you informed me on your first reply.

My passcode is a number that I have used for something else for over 30 years, so it is doubtful that I forgot it. I could have entered it incorrectly, but I have made several attempts and all were rejected.

I can still receive phone calls on the iPhone 7 that is locked. I am also getting various notifications. I can move them up and down by swiping with three fingers, but I cannot open them to read the full content.

I question the reasoning of Apple engineers for not allowing a fingerprint to unlock the phone after a restart. It would be interesting to know the rationale for that.

I am considering using iMobie Phone Rescue 3 to see if I can recover the photograph and audio files that were not backed up. Any thoughts on that?

From an article I read, you have to wait for 15 minutes for another passcode attempt after the eighth attempt. That is where I am now and the same article said that you get ten attempts before the iPhone will have to be restored.

You have to ask Apple.

I've never used any recovery programs, so I can't say whether you'd or not you'd be wasting your money.
