Sharing and Permissions Problem

When I open "info" on my iMac HD, I see three "Names/Users?" under "Sharing & Permissions"

When I try to change the "privilege" on the "everyone" account to "Read & Write", I keep getting the error message:

"The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission"

How can this be? I am the sole owner and registered user/administrator of this computer.

How did the "Names" in the Sharing & Permissions area get their names?

One name is "system", the second is "wheel" and the third is "everyone"

I bought this computer brand new, how did those names get there?

More importantly, how do I change the permissions to "Read & Write" ?

Please help, thanks

I'm not are why your 2017 iMac should be any different than the older one. (Unless the apps are incompatible with High Sierra) If you still have your 2009 iMac you'll see the permissions are set the same on that hard drive.

You might try running Etrecheck It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. All it does is provide a snapshot of your system. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

Ok, thanks for the info. However, the reason I am asking is that when I download a game from Big Fish Games,

the game (500Kb to 800Mb size) have been taking hours to download, then upon completion of the download they immediately indicate: "installation failed", error code 769.

Or when I attempt to download a game it will get stuck at (eg. 70%) download then stop and won't go any further without me pausing and restarting the download and in the end getting the installation failed message!

After contacting Big Fish Support, they advised me to go to: Applications, change permissions on the "everyone" user to "Read & Write" and this should solve my problem.

I tried to do that but I keep getting an error message : "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission."

Since I am the administrator, why can't I change that permission?

Or is something else causing the download issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I haven't heard of having to change those permissions to install an app. If you're trying to install an app which is not in the AppStore go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy and be sure "AppStore and identified developers" is chosen. If that's so you should get a message when you try to install the app and you can choose to install anyway.

In any event I wouldn't attempt to change the permissions on your hard drive as that will cause problems down the road.

OK, I checked and the "AppStore and identified developers" is chosen.

I have installed many games from this site in the past and recently installed two games without any problem.

It just seems that within the past couple of months this issue arose.

My 2009 iMac never gave me this type of problem, but this 2017 iMac (which I have owned since June 2018) doesn't handle the same games without problems arising.

I appreciate your advice, and welcome any help I can get with this problem.

Thanks again
